United Steelworkers District Three director Steve Hunt told Public Eye today none of the donations his union has made to the New Democrats were earmarked to pay for party president Moe Sihota's stipend. "First off, we're not earmarking anything. And we donate to the party where we think it's appropriate," he said in an interview, adding, "We're contributing to our party the way we always do. You know many chicken dinners I've made it to? Tons of them. And where we put it? It's all over the place." Earlier this month, New Democrat provincial secretary Jan O'Brien confirmed the party is paying Mr. Sihota's stipend using a "generous, earmarked gift from the labour movement." The British Columbia Government and Service Employees' Union and the Hospital Employees' Union have told Public Eye they didn't contribute to that gift. British Columbia Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair has said his group did, to the tune of $4,000.
