Poll position

Yesterday, we reported the British Columbia New Democrats presently have 13,500 members. This, at a time when the party is at 44 percent support in the polls - 12 percentage points ahead of the Liberals, according to a Mustel Research Group Ltd. survey conducted in May. By comparison, then provincial secretary Gerry Scott reported the New Democrats had "well over 13,000" members at the time of the party's November 2003 leadership convention. A poll conducted by Mustel a month after that convention put the New Democrats at 37 percent support - five percentage points behind the Liberals. The following is a complete copy of the relevant portion of Mr. Scott's report - which includes membership data dating back to January 2002 - as well as a table comparing those numbers to the party's standing in the polls.

New Democrat membership and poll numbers
