The ministry of housing and social development's push to allow for the construction of taller wood-frame buildings was met with concern from engineering, fire and earthquake experts - as well as American officials. The government has since said the results of recent seismic test have show such buildings can perform safely in a major earthquake. Nevertheless, other structural and fire safety concerns remain. But that didn't stop the government from awarding the ministry branch responsible for that initiative a regional premier's innovation and excellence award on Friday. Fancy that!
