Fighting the Red Army

The federal Conservatives seem to be in competition with the Liberals to see who can lend the most helping hands to the newly-formed Macdonald-Laurier Institute, the country's first Ottawa-based think tank. Next month, the institute will be holding an inaugural, $250 per ticket fundraising event at the Pan Pacific Vancouver Hotel. In an email sent to his friends and colleague, Canadian Strategy Group Inc. senior associate Marko Dekovic - a former member of the Harper administration's ministers' regional office in British Columbia - encouraged his fellow Torries to participate in the event. "The Liberals are out there putting together their tables and showing force," he wrote. "Let's not be outdone by the Red Army. Let's show Conservatism is alive in well in British Columbia." The following is a complete copy of that email, as well as an invitation to the fundraiser. That invitation also includes details on the price of sponsoring a table at that event - which ranges from $10,000 to $15,000.

Subject: Participation at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute inaugural event in Vancouver

Dear friends and colleagues,

When Brian Crowley set forth with forming the first Canadian policy think tank to be located in Ottawa, I thought, now there is a smart guy.

Then Brian decided to organize the very first event for this policy think tank - NOT in Montreal, NOT in Toronto, NOT even in Calgary - BUT right here in Vancouver. Now there is a really smart guy!

So, I would strongly encourage you to consider participating in this great event, Co-hosted by Hon. John Reynolds and Senator Larry Campbell.

The Liberals are out there putting together their tables and showing force. Let's not be outdone by the Red Army. Let's show Conservatism is alive in well in British Columbia.

Attached are the details for the event featuring Andrew Coyne and Chantal Hebert, along with Brain Crowley. This one of a kind event is not to be missed.

If you want to purchase tickets, put together tables, or are interested in sponsorships, including hosting the Hon. John Reynolds Table, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will assist you with coordination.

Hope to see you there.

Cheers,

So what we have here is a battle over who spends $250.00
and self-centred bragging rights of ending "dominance" at an event, started by someone who was in the Regional Minister's Office.

That $250.00 could be better spent on donating to the Conservative party.

Just a quick note: I'm not sure who's claiming this is Canada's first Ottawa-based think tank, but they're mistaken. The Conference Board of Canada, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the Vanier Institute, the Caledon Institute on Social Policy, the Institute on Governance, the North-South Institute and the Polaris Institute and more call the nation's capital home.
