Last week, Premier Gordon Campbell was asked what would happen to businesses with oil and gas leases in the Flathead Valley now that the government has banned such activity in the area. In response, the premier told the reporter "we will make sure they are not punished for this." Although he later added the compensation costs would be "minimal." And why might that be? Well, on Friday, an intergovernmental relations secretariat spokesperson told us there are no oil and gas leases in Flathead. The spokesperson couldn't say whether the premier's statement on compensation also applied to mining companies. Instead, the spokesperson stated the government simply "intends to engage with the existing mining rights holders in the valley."
