Last week, Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources Minister Blair Lekstrom told Public Eye he couldn't "speculate" about whether the government will compensate companies active in the Flathead Valley now that it has banned mining and oil and gas development in the area. But, a day before the minister made that statement, Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer was more definitive during an interview with the Associated Press's Matthew Brown. Mr. Brown paraphrased him as saying "companies with money already invested in leases or exploration (in the Flathead) would be compensated through the Canadian and U.S. federal governments." So did the governor know something the minister didn't?
