Silent sponsors?

Today, BC Housing and the City of Vancouver announced the opening of their homelessness information - something we've been reporting on since November. That release detailed the support being provided four of Downtown Eastside Connects six private sector sponsors. But it included no mention of The Province and The Vancouver Sun, which are providing free advertising for the centre. In an interview with Public Eye, BC Housing's executive director of corporate communications Susan Thom explained the omission this way: "If you look at the news release, it talks about the sponsorship in terms of offsetting the costs. So those are the sponsors who were listed. The Vancouver Sun and The Province, as media sponsors, did not defray the costs of operating the centre. Their sponsorship is really to raise awareness of the centre for local residents so they can come down and take a look at what is happening in the Downtown Eastside."
