Earlier, we exclusively told you Michael Ignatieff has "some problems" with a high-profile Liberal private member's bill meant to hold mining, oil and gas corporations responsible for their actions overseas. Specifically, the party leader said, "We want to make sure that our foreign affairs officials in other countries are able to monitor the work of our resource extractors in foreign countries without tying these guys in knots." So what does MiningWatch Canada think about that comment? "I would say it's worrying," said the organization's spokesperson Jamie Kneen. "It's worry that Ignatieff chooses to focus on the bill as presenting problems rather than presenting solutions."
Mr. Kneen acknowledged there are some errors in C-300 that need to be amended. But, that being said, "This bill has always had an uphill struggle. It had tough scrutiny from Liberal MPs as much as from anyone else. It barely passed through the House of Commons. And I think that's because some Liberals were absent for the vote - including Michael Ignatieff. And we know that other Liberals - like Scott Brison - are pretty much opposed to anything that would limit corporate power as it will."
So, Mr. Ignatieff statement, is just "indicative of the kinds of obstacles this bill has already had to face."
