At last month's provincial New Democrat biennial convention, the party's elected officials - both past and present - put copies of their favourite books up for auction. Entries ranged from Mickey Leigh's I Slept with Joey Ramone: A Family Memoir (Cowichan-Ladysmith MLA Doug Routley) to a 1926 copy of George Bernard Shaw's The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism and Capitalism (pundit and former North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA David Schreck). Mr. Schreck's book received the highest bid - $110. But it was Delta North legislator Guy Gentner's entry - Decade of Deceit by Anonymous - that attracted the most attention.
Opening it, readers were greeted with title page featuring the book's true title and author: Lies, Greed and Madness: My Story by Gordon Campbell. But those looking for further details about that story may have been disappointed. The reason: the faux book, which was handmade by Mr. Gentner and fetched $50, had been hollowed out to encase an empty bottle of Gordon's London Dry Gin!
