Last week, the Surrey North Delta Leader's Kevin Diakiw reported Surrey city councillor Tom Gill holds the swing vote on a proposal to install 150 slot machines at Newton Bingo Country. Speaking on Public Eye Radio yesterday, Mr. Gill said he still wasn't sure whether he would support or oppose that proposal - a matter that will be decided on tonight. But he said non-profit groups, which rely on funding from gaming facilities, have continued to encourage him to take a pro-slot machine position. "Just as recently as yesterday, I received an email from an email from John Russell, who used to be the former executive director for the Greater Vancouver Mental Health Services Society," Mr. Gill said. "And he, again, was strongly encouraging me to support the project."
"There's very few people that I consider a mentor for me. But this one individual has made significant changes in both the mental health and addictions fields in Vancouver. And the work he's done in Surrey is just phenomenal. And, again, when I have individuals such as him giving me advice on how to move forward, I stop and I stumble and I try to think things through."
