Victoria's new city manager Gail Stevens will get to work next week at a price tag of $200,000 a year. According to the provincial executive compensation disclosure statements, that's just under the $231,835 the premier's deputy minister Jessica McDonald made in fiscal 2007/08. But, in an interview on Public Eye Radio, mayor Dean Fortin defended the city manager's salary stating, "This is generally within the framework of the industry standard and where everybody is getting paid in that. That's the range....You take a look at people who are leaders in universities or other public sector places - this is completely in line and probably lower than some of those other ones."

OMG.

Are people STILL using that tired old chestnut?

But Billies mommy lets him stay up until 9pm! Ignoring that Billy shouldn't be staying up that late, it's not good for him.

Piffle.

I am personally insulted by this feeble excuse. Not only Dean feel this is 'in line', but 'probably lower than some'. BULLSHIT.

If we assume *choke* that Jessica's enormous salary is in anyway justified *gag* how on earth can you possibly compare what she is supposed to be doing to that of a 'City Manager'?

Sean can we please have a side by side comparison of their two respective job descriptions?

Is Dean totally unaware of the backlash that has taken place in the last few years against C level business men and their HUGE compensation plans?

How does this salary compare to the average wage of a city employee?

What are the performance measures for this position?

How do these large salaries (you know this is just the start) impact the tax burden of the taxpayers of Victoria?

How do these large salaries affect the cities budget?

What programs/services/projects were recently cut due to a shortage of funds?

'Generally within the framework' is not a justifiation. Did they advertise for this opening? Were they unable to find a qualfied candidate for a lower salary? Did they even try? OR.... are they using this enormous salary as a precedent to have all other executive wages increased within the city and beyond?

I am HOPPING mad.
