Kootenay kulture wars

"It is absolutely essential that there are more ball caps than tuques in the crowd." That's the message incumbent East Kootenay provincial Liberal candidate Bill Bennett's campaign manager Courtney Magro sent to his supporters earlier this morning, urging them to get hunters out to an all all-candidates debate tonight in Fernie. "Casey and his ilk will be working double time to make sure that (New Democrat candidate Troy Sebastian) is well-supported tonight," she wrote, referencing environmental group Wildsight's Southern Rockies program manager Casey Brennan. "We can't let Wildsight beat us to the mic."

Wildsight's opposition to coalbed methane development has earned the group the enmity of Mr. Bennett, who accused the group in January of stacking a Fernie Chamber of Commerce meeting. But now his campaign manager seems to be using the same tactics.

Describing a debate last night in Sparwood, Ms. Magro, "It went amazing and all of our supporters in the crowd did a fantastic job of supporting Bill. Bill wants you to know how much energy he gets from your well-timed interjections and enthusiasm. The way people sat scattered throughout the audience was perfect. I particularly loved Tammy shouting out "Vote Wildsight!" several times. :)"

As a result, Ms. Magro continued, "I think Troy left last night's debate a bit rattled." The following is a complete copy of the aforementioned email.

Hi everyone,

It's 7am and Bill and I are already on the road back to Fernie this morning. We have a busy day ahead, including the Fernie forum tonight.

Bill and I just want to thank everyone who came to the Sparwood debate last night. It went amazing and all of our supporters in the crowd did a fantastic job of supporting Bill. Bill wants you to know how much energy he gets from your well-timed interjections and enthusiasm. The way people sat scattered throughout the audience was perfect. I particularly loved Tammy shouting out "Vote Wildsight!" several times. :)

We need to see the exact same thing again tonight in Fernie but with 3x the supporters. Bill really needs to see folks from the motorized sector show up tonight, and particularly hunters. Bill's been a huge advocate for this group for the past 8 years so they really need to come out and show their support. It is absolutely essential that there are more ball caps than tuques in the crowd.

I think Troy left last night's debate a bit rattled. Casey and his ilk will be working double time to make sure that Troy is well-supported tonight. We need you to make calls of your own today to make sure our crowd is out in full force. We need people like Kent & Don in Sparwood and George and Kevin in Fernie to call around today to get the hunters out.

Lastly, if you have been given a question to ask, be prepared to submit it in writing but also to ask it at the microphone. We can't let Wildsight beat us to the mic.

Thanks so much, everyone

We'll see you tonight!

Courtney
