Emerson's understudy

On Friday, Foreign Affairs Minister David Emerson announced he wouldn't be seeking re-election as the Conservative parliamentarian for Vancouver-Kingsway. So who's going to run for the Tories in that riding? Well, Public Eye has learned the answer to that question will be Delta-Richmond East constituency association president Salomon Rayek.

Wow, I pay more attention to politics than the average Jane but I gotta tell you it's getting really hard to keep up in this part of town.

We've got the new federal Liberal candidate (Yuen?, not sure what her story is yet) leaving long messages on my answering machine Friday, plus folks were dropping off flyers for the new federal NDP guy (Davies, local guy with the Teamsters) yesterday and now this new Conservative political player from Delta.

Provincially, we also now have the new BC Liberal hopeful (McSomeone? from the Medical Association) and the new NDP hopeful (McSomeone-else from downtown). And that's not to mention the 50-odd would-be Vision candidates for School, Parks Board and City Council to weed through, plus all the old COPE and NPA ones to consider and rate.

Casting a thoughtful vote in Vancouver Fairview/ Kingsway in these upcoming elections is going to be the prerogative of the privileged few who have LOTS of spare time on their hands to actually get to know enough about all these newbies to make a meaningful choice.
