Earlier, when asked whether the Coalition of Progressive Electors would have more difficulty working with Vision Vancouver if Allan De Genova becomes the centrist civic party's mayoral candidate, recording secretary Tim Louis stated, "COPE could never ever put forward as its mayoral candidate, an NPA retread developer advocate who is no different then the current mayoral incumbent." And, in an interview with Public Eye, coalition external relations co-chair Ellen Woodsworth echoed that view.
Said Ms. Woodsworth, "I think it would be more difficult to reach an agreement in terms of a joint mayoral candidate - which is what I think we need to defeat Mayor Sam Sullivan. I think that's a big question. We'll see whether De Genova reaches out to us. So far, there hasn't been anything."
The former councillor also worried what impact Mr. De Genova's mayoral nomination bid would have on Vision Vancouver "I think, in order to win, he needs to sign-up a lot of friends. And I assume his friends will be Liberals. The nature of the party's going to change significantly," she added.
Interesting to note De Genova's comment in today's Vancouver Sun:
"To serve under Gregor Robertson... he's so far left he falls over. I couldn't work under that regime"
Well, Robertson must be the most moderate guy around. Just imagine what De Genova's views of COPE would be!!
Would this be the same Tim Louis who told the Vancouver Courier on November 23, 2005 - after Sam Sullivan defeated Jim Green to become mayor:
"We had two businessmen running for office and the one that was elected has honesty and integrity," he said.
I'm a firm believer that Mr. Sullivan has done nothing for Vancouver. Having said that, Tim Louis can do us all a favour and stick to his very successful law practice, real estate business (Tim owns multiple office spaces) and nice Kits home. While he is at it he should stop pretending to be a working class street fighter.
Tim Louis is a Dinosaur of civic politics of yesterday. DeGenova will bring a level of excitement to the vision nomination contest- having contested nominations are a good thing for political parties, I also hope that Raymond Lousi and Robertson get in the race also (however I think robertson won't end up running since it won't be an easy fight). As for vision making a deal with COPE; I think COPE should moderate their views first and then maybe there will be something to talk about- right now COPE just wants to hold vision ransom with the idea of running a mayoral candidate as their loaded gun. They should just be ignored- appeasing the hard left vote will only lose vision the centrist voters, and the centre is were you win elections.
"Tim Louis is a Dinosaur of civic politics of yesterday."
No argument there. But isn't Senator Da Vinci in danger of falling into the same category as a result of testimony at the inquiry into Frank Paul's hypothermia death? According to the coroner on duty, it was Da Vinci who told her not to dig too deeply, ... just let it slide. How will this fact be greeted in those Aboriginal leadership circles that are politically attached to the Liberal Party?
Making the comment about Tim Louis and the ownership of his law offices is really tacky. Just because Tim owns his law practise doesn't make him a real estate developer.
As for the other offices he owns in the same building all I have to say is this.
What a truly decent guy Tim Louis is because as some of us know COPE occupies one of the offices he owns and receives free rent courtesy of Mr. Louis.
I'd say this is a testament to Tim's generous spirit and character especially considering a number of COPE officials havn't been particulary welcoming of him of late.
