
Last month, The Province's John Bermingham reported the Campbell administration is "looking at a new carbon tax to combat climate change." In an interview with Mr. Bermingham, Finance Minister Carole Taylor said "she's considering the tax in next year's budget, as a way of reducing the burning of fossil fuels." But that might not be the only financial measure being considered by the provincial government as part of its climate action commitment. For example, could it be the government is considering making fuel efficient vehicles cheaper to licence, while increasing such fees for less fuel efficient vheicles?
If the provincial government is going to derive more revenue from gas taxes and vehicle fees, and is going to introduce an additional carbon tax, then it will have to confront the fact that the Feds are charging 5% at the till for most items and BC is still going for 7%. At some point, Taylor will have to bring the provincial sales tax down to the level of the reduced GST.
What bloody hypocrisy, tax, tax, tax, Campbell & Co. are worse than the NDP. First he and his pal Kevin Falcon compel TransLink to build a now $2.4 billion light-metro (RAV), a transit mode that has proven not to attract the motorist from the car.
Don't like taking buses? Well, will you take a bus to RAV? Not!
Instead of building with much cheaper LRT, via the Arbutus Corridor (about $1.6 billion cheaper) to Steveston and the airport. Cheaper LRT = more LRT lines = a more attractive 'rail' transit service = providing a product that will attract the motorist from the car.
Duh, that concept works everywhere but here, where Campbell & Co. has given the coup de grace to affordable 'rail' transit in the region. And affordable 'rail' transit is the cornerstone of reducing pollution and congestion.
But no, not here, tax and spend Campbell and goody-two shoes Taylor, will do the political correct thing, the revenue generating thing, tax, tax. tax.
Throw the tea into the Inner Harbour, lads!

Bring it on. Tax the crap out of SUV's and pick up trucks. Double the Translink tax currently imposed on gasoline buyers in teh lower mainland. Build more transit --- evergreen, UBC.
Toll the bridges. Impose congestion tolls on highway 1.
It's time to change.... and those that don't get should move to Alberta. BC is ready for this.
I'm a taxpayer, and Gorden Campbell is a moron, who just wants to get as much of my money in his pocket as he can while he is in office! He couldn't care that the ministry of children and family development just had a renovation! That went in excess of $300, 000 over budget! What did Campbell do about it?? NOTHING! Lets get him out of office as soon as we can, and get the NDP back in!
Not that I am trying to take over this discussion or anything like that, but I thought I should add that in the Sept 14th First Quarter Review, BC Finance projected the 2007/08 year end social services tax revenues to be $4.7 billion out of total revenues of $38.5 billion. If one takes away two sevenths of that, some $1.35 billion, the impact on total revenues is just -3.5%.
Can Finance Minister Taylor really look the average Canadian in the eye and say, "Forget about it, we can't even afford to think about that!"
