Yesterday, the Vancouver Courier’s Allen Garr asked, "Am I the only one who thinks it is odd that Vancouver's civil city commissioner Geoff Plant turned up at last week's NPA fundraiser? Plant may not be on staff but he is still on the city payroll." But that’s a distinction Mr. Plant seems to believe is important.
Asked about the alleged conflict, Mr. Plant, who has been tasked with reducing instances of public disorder, told Public Eye, "I’m not an employee of the city. And I’m not sure that would matter one way or another. In fact, my role is as a consultant. I don’t hold an office that has a statutory origin. So it would seem to me to be a thing to do - to go to the dinner. It was a great way to talk to a lot of folks about civil city issues. So it was certainly useful from that point of view."
"There’s no doubt the purchase of the ($185) ticket" by Mr. Plant’s law firm Heenan Blaikie LLP "helped support the NPA. But I’m not a bureaucrat with the city. I’m a private citizen whose doing work for the city. And, in that respect, I didn’t think there was a problem."
In fact, Mr. Plant says "Who knows, if Vision Vancouver invited me to a dinner, I might show up there too." Or even the Coalition of Progressive Electors perhaps? "Well, it would be interesting. If they did it might be a great opportunity to go and meet the people who support COPE and get a sense from them about what initiatives the city should be undertaking to ensure Project Civil City gets realized."
Give me strength. Why doesn't Plant acknowledge what we all already know - that Civil City is a taxpayer-funded public relations campaign designed to make it appear that the NPA is actually doing something around homelessness. Instead of "consulting" (read: hob-nobbing) with rich people about homelessness at an NPA fundraiser, he might want to talk to ACTUAL HOMELESS PEOPLE in the Downtown Eastside, Commercial Drive and other neighbourhoods.
Plant should donate his contract proceeds to a homeless shelter, it would do moer good than he's doing now as "Civil City Commissioner." As for the City of Vancouver, stop insulting the intelligence of your citizens and spend all of your time lobbying the federal and provincial governments for the funds necessary to implement the Vancouver City Council-approved Homelessness Action Strategy.
I am sure that when Senator da Vinci was Mayor there were lots of dinners and plenty of city contractors attended. I don't know that for a fact, but I strongly suspect that's how business was done on Larry's watch. I mean really, the man now belongs openly to the Sponsorship party, ... so how would he be instinctively inclined to operate?
Budd says he is sure that Mayor Campbell had such meetings. Got any specific dates in mind? Or are you just making statement you can't back up. Plant is Gordon's man at City Hall in Vancouver.
As I said, DL, I don't know of specifics, but when you look at the loot that gets raised by Vision and COPE as well as the NPA, there's nothing to figure. If political appointees and favoured contractors were NOT attending dinners in the years 2002 to 2005, I for one would be very surprised, and I bet you would be too.
As for Geoff Plant, the guy is so incredibly boring on a personal level that this kind of thing, an argument over whether or not it was proper for him to attend some dinner or other, is about the only way the poor schnook can get his name in the news.
