A carrot and stick approach

Federal Green Vancouver Quadra candidate Dan Grice is going to "really push" the issue of democratic accountability during the upcoming by-election in that riding, proposing a radical change to the way parliamentarians are compensated. Speaking yesterday morning on Public Eye Radio, Mr. Grice said, "if elected, he's prepard to "take half of my salary and put that aside and let my constituents vote whether I should get the rest of that money" - challenging his opponents to make the same commitment. "I come from the private sector. And you don't get paid a flat salary. You get paid performance bonuses," he explained.

Mr. Grice also spoke out against the fact many parliamentarians seem to ignore voters once elected. "The fact MPs don't regularly meet with their constituents is a travesty of our democratic system. Their job is to represent us - not represent the party. It's not vote once every four years and see ya later.” And that's why the Green candidate promises to have regular video conferences with constituents if he gets to Ottawa.

Okay, here's a bet. Not one of the columnists and pundits who claimed that NDP MLAs who donate their pay raise to charity were hypocrites because they will be getting a tax receipt for the contributions is going to question the motives of Dan Grice. Any takers?

I think Grice will have a tough time selling to the Conservative Vancouver Quadra. Mary McNeil will gladly take the riding from the ever so unpopular Joyce Murray and the Nonexistent NDP. The greens arn't even a factor, they'll just take votes away from the Green Joyce Murray and the NDP.
I cant wait to see a by-election where the conservatives make a comeback, the timing is right and change is in the air.

I don't know about anyone else and how they are paid at their jobs, but I'm paid by the hour, with the odd performance bonus thrown in for a laugh. At least that way, all my time working is covered. But I digress. And "Green" Joyce Murray? The same Joyce Murray as the Minister of Earth Wind and Fire who re opened the hunting of Grizzly Bears, who made statements to Rafe Mair that it wasn't her job to act as a "police person" over the environment, but rather find ways to allow businesses to make a profit off the environment. Joyce Murray isn't fit to manage a popsicle stand in a provincial park, let alone call herself "green."

And just because you were raised in Quadra, doesn't mean that you're all that and a bag of chips either. After all, when it comes to political boobs, one only needs to recall the "creme de la creme" comment, from a Quadra resident.
