Living within their means?

The federal Greens may be having some money troubles - this, according to a petition being circulated among supporters. The petition, obtained by Public Eye, demands the party's budget be balanced by June 2007, with all debts paid off by December 31, 2007. The reason: the party is, evidently, "facing increasing accounts payable and cannot sustain its current level of spending" - a situation at odds with the Greens' commitment to fiscal responsibility. Press secretary Camille Labchuk didn't respond to a request for comment concerning the party's finances. But it's said the Greens may have accumulated $420,000 in new debt since October. The following is a complete copy of that petition.

Whereas the Green Party of Canada proudly promotes fiscal responsibility as one of its key policy pillars; and

Whereas the Green Party of Canada has been accumulating debt, is facing increasing accounts payable and cannot sustain its current level of spending;

and

Whereas the Green Party of Canada's own sustainability, as a political organization and force for political change in Canada, will be threatened, should corrective action not be taken to improve its financial situation;

Be it resolved that the Federal Council immediately direct its Executive Director to undertake all necessary measures, to ensure that the Green Party of Canada's budgets balance, beginning in June 2007 and henceforth, and to ensure that all debt and accounts payable, accrued to the Green Party of Canada, be paid off, no later than 31 December 2007.

Better attach themselves to some big developers cuz they sure aint getting any from the oil or the auto sector. Pimping money from the tree-huggers and brain-washed pupils sure aint easy.

Like all other parties, the GPC was hiring staff in anticipation of a spring election. With that being delayed months or years, the goal is to go back to former levels of staffing and spending.

Dan, while I can buy the crisis, given the high expectations a few weeks ago, why start throwing up roadblocks, at least until you know when the writ will be dropped.

Committing your party to a debt repayment deadline just as an election breaks out is a guaranteed foot wound, believe me.
