A magnetic fundraising personality?

Did you know federal Liberal leader Stephane Dion is an environmentalist? Well, given Mr. Dion's seemingly inability to speak about little else in the way of policy issues, you likely do. And, in keeping with that theme, the Liberal constituency association in Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam has organized a $75 per ticket fundraiser dinner featuring Simon Fraser University biological sciences professor John D. Reynolds - the Tom Buell BC Leadership Chair in Salmon Conservation. According to the advertisement for that dinner, his talk - "Things Change: Oceans, Climate, and Environmental Policy" - will be "non-partisan. His participation does not indicate support for, or affiliation with, the Liberal Party of Canada." Fair enough. But, regardless of Prof. Reynold's intentions, couldn't it be argued his presence at that event is inadvertently assisting the Grits in their partisan fundraising efforts?

In response to that argument, Prof. Reynolds - an internationally recognized expert on biodiversity and fish ecology - explained, "My approach is that I'm happy to talk to anyone who wants to hear about marine conservation issues - regardless of their party affiliation. I take the position that if I start discriminating against this group or for that group or whatever and get political than I'm just going to be on a road that I don't really want to travel down. I'm involved in advising (the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans). I've been advising the province as well. And these are all totally non-partisan." The following is a complete copy of the aforementioned advertisement for that fundraiser.

The environment IS a political issue. And it is clear that the Dion/May alliance cares about this issue a lot more than the Harper/Layton alliance.

(Let's not forget Layton's famous line about "lending your vote" to the NDP so that Harper could get elected! Never again!)

To some degree, I give the Liberals full credit here. They are organizing what appears to be a very serious presentation on fisheries issues before a crowd of party supporters.

Yeh right Budd. It's more of a staged act than anything else.

Remember Dion was Environment Minister and didn't
do very much except polish the name plate on his door.

"Remember Dion was Environment Minister and didn't do very much except polish the name plate on his door."

Agreed on that point, Grit Guy. However, as rubber chicken circuit events to, this could be considered a quality improvement. I wonder if they'll serve wild or farmed salmon to the guests?

Sounds more like work than play!

Poor Stephane Dion.

As far as I know, the only big-ticket environmental project in the Lower Mainland that is supported by the Liberals but opposed by the Tories is the Dredging of Burnaby Lake. Most people have never even heard of the plan, and it ain't going to hit the richter scale when the election comes. In fact, most environmentalists see dredging as a pro-development plan, not a pro-environment plan.

Oh dear. Where did that natural ruling party of Canada go wrong?

Yes, did you hear California's governor is also a tree-hugger? Certainly Arnold cant speak proper English, but at least he has enough money to buy enough lies to make people believe he hugs trees, but Stephen has no appeal or money and he fails miserably trying to come across people as an environmentalist.
