The Red Green Show

This morning, on Public Eye Radio, Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts associate director Shira Goodman discusses why her state is moving away from electing judges - a system 66 percent of Canadians support according to a recent Strategic Counsel survey. Former Vancouver children and youth advocate Penny Parry discusses the political punishments that can be levelled against social service organizations that speak up on behalf of their clients. And Convergence Communications Ltd. principal Mike Magee shares with us his thoughts about the controversial deal between the federal Liberals and the Greens. Also on the show: our rabble-rousing panel - Bob Russell, Alex Tsakumis, Allan Warnke and Brad Zubyk - debate the week that was in provincial and federal politics. You can listen to Public Eye Radio outside of Victoria by logging into CFAX 1070 between 8:30 and 10:00. If you have a question for one of our guests, you can email us, leave a comment below or phone (250) 386-1161 during the show.

Err.. one in 100 Americans don't want elected judges so that's why we should not elect them in Canada too? I got a feeling that 2 out of 3 Canadians want elected judges because they think most of them are not effective nor representing REAL Canadian values.

I really enjoy this panel. They know what they are talking about. It's a refreshing change from the boring talk radio on other stations. I look forward to every week. Thank you!

"I got a feeling that 2 out of 3 Canadians want elected judges because they think most of them are not effective nor representing REAL Canadian values."

Wonder what those REAL Canadian values might be?
Same ones expressed by REAL Women?

The idea of electing judges should be aborted and
tossed out.

Electing judges would put too much politics into the Cdn. Judiciary, as one can see what happens in the Excited States.

Best to leave as is.

Not only should elect judges, we should make them liable (both civil & criminal) for their frequent trial and sentencing mistakes.
Too many times over the past 25 years, counter-productive elements of Canadian society have gotten a phoney, stern lecture and a get-out-of-jail-card from some appointed political-patronage-hack.
Just ask any Vancouver/Richmond Street Racer or Surrey Car Thief !

"Not only should elect judges, we should make them liable (both civil & criminal) for their frequent trial and sentencing mistakes."

That doesn't even happen in the United States,
and wouldn't happen here.

I strongly disagree with the election of judges.

People will tend to elect judges on their political positioning (abortion, etc.) and that's
totally wrong with how our judiciary system works.

True. The MP's who change the Criminal Code and the A/G and S/G should be more accountable.

Judge Judy's position is fine in the ivy covered halls of UVIC & UBC but in the "real world" judges are unfortunately not teachers and social workers.
So their failures & errors don't just drop someone's grade point average, they drop innocent people.

So what's your solution, babycakes?

Elected Judges? Watch the idiot pro-choice and pro-life groups battle it out to get judges who fit their own agenda.

Then there would be battles for judges with a heart and those who are strict on law n' order.

It would be a real mess, sweetie, just like in
the United States (remember that yelling over Bork?)

Id rather see the politicians more accountable.

They make the laws, the judges don't. Raise the
miniumum sentences and yes make the judges more
accountable, but within.
