This morning, on Public Eye Radio, former provincial New Democrat aboriginal affairs minister John Cashore shares his thoughts on the Campbell administration's New Relationship with British Columbia's First Nations. Former Manitoba New Democrat legislator Don Scott discusses how much we should be paying our politicians. And Exxpose Exxon campaign director Shawnee Hoover tells us what political tactics we can expect the oil and gas giant to use if they want access to the province's offshore oil and gas reserves. Also on the show: our rabble-rousing panel - Ariel Lade, Bob Russell, Alex Tsakumis and Allan Warnke - debate the week that was in provincial and federal politics. You can listen to Public Eye Radio outside of Victoria by logging into CFAX 1070 between 8:30 and 10:00. If you have a question for one of our guests, you can email us, leave a comment below or phone (250) 386-1161 during the show.
Thank you for having John Cashore on the program. He always clearly tells us the problems and points the way. His comments on Interim Measures are clear and as he says, they have been around for many years. ALR land is a big point and as he says, there should have been more work on developing a method to resolve. There must be a way for adults to settle this out. (People have to eat and to remove the land simply to rent it out for a harbour storage area is simply wrong)Way to go John, you always make a lot os sense.
I am one who believes that politicians very poorly paid. Apart from a handful of very dedicated individuals who are intelligent and who make considered decisions, most of them are not qualified and should not be running for office.
We are not attracting quality candidates and one of the reasons is the terrible pay.
Ironically, this problem leaks into the public service where the Deputy to the Premier and the Premier himself hires the individuals who run our ministries. In most Provinces, it is a public servant who is doing the hiring and who is far better qualified to judge the abilities of our Deputy Ministers and Assistant Deputy Ministers. The politics needs to be taken out of this process.
MVC In one word dick-tators all politicians are a bunch of gutless sheepall, just like our so called msm non-news CanWest media Van Sun, Van Province, Globull TV, and I think CTV. Traitors all!
It's time to take back "OUR RIGHTS and FREEDOMS"

And clearly...there is no flag large enough to cover the over-medicated, zealous, all-over-the-map whackjobs who may choose to take advantage of Sean's generous side, and post here.
If it is true that Wayne does indeed have a 'world', please, someone get the rest of us a rocketship with a one way ticket.
More to serious matters...MVC is quite right...we do not pay MLAs high enough. Think of the job Adrian Dix is doing, carrying the Opposition on his back...think of Carole Taylor, who signed off on agreements with union after union to stave off what could have been labour peril in B.C. True, some of you may list others who have done nothing...well, that's precisely my point, offer a decent compensation package and get the best. Taylor and Dix are exceptions. Parties across the Board will be able to approach a much better talent pool from which to draw candidates.
Say, for example, 100K for MLA's, 150K for Cabinet (and Leader of the Opposition), 175K for the Premier. And pensions in the 75K range after twelve years.
Without packages like this, you will see a lot of floaters continue to occupy the benches on both sides of the aisle.
'Say, for example, 100K for MLA's, 150K for Cabinet (and Leader of the Opposition), 175K for the Premier. And pensions in the 75K range after twelve years.'
Why should ADMs and DMs earn more than MLAs, Ministers and the Premier?
There is something wrong with this picture and we will continue to count excellence coming from our elected officials on the fingers of one hand until the lot in there now is thrown out, salaries are increased significantly and intelligence and considered decisions replace ineptitude and ignorance.
MVC, I don't disagree with you at all. I just happen to believe, very strongly, that DMs and ADMs are way overpaid and their ridiculous compensation packages should be dialed down. I think the Victorian Liberals did not sweep enough swivel servants out the door in 2001 and it is clear from some of the overruns in major projects. Studies to study studies. Much in some ministries is make-work nonsense. If you think about the amount of waste, it's mind boggling. But neither the NDP nor the Liberals had enough testicular fortitude to fix the bloody issue.
Off with their heads? Godamned right! Absolutely, er, I mean the swivelers, of course.....
