Dead armadillos and yellow lines

More than a year ago, Premier Gordon Campbell "unveiled a comprehensive $3-billion plan to open up the province's transportation network today in Vancouver" - also known as the Gateway Program. But the provincial New Democrats still haven't decided whether they'll support that program. At a news conference in January, party leader Carole James told reporters, "We're waiting for the information” - a reference to Opposition demands for transportation ministry documentation on the environmental impact of that program. "It's critical to get the information, to get the facts to be able to make a decision based on that.” But could it be that some of her caucus members are getting a bit tired of standing in the middle of the road? After all, transportation critic David Chudnovsky is scheduled to attend a mass rally in Delta against the highway expansion project - this, according to an announcement from Gatewaysucks.org "a loose voluntary association of individuals and organizations who are ticked off about Gateway." The following is a complete copy of that announcement.

Mass Rally in Delta

If people want to make placards for the rally and bring them to Grandview Park to take to the rally, that would be great! Lets show some East Van solidarity with people South of the Fraser who have such poor public transit. We are all concerned about the health and sustainability of our valley that is threatened by the Gateway Project.

Rideshares are being organized from the North Shore, East Vancouver, New Westminster, Kitsilano, South Delta/Ladner/Tsawwassen (call 943-6406), and White Rock/South Surrey , There are folks coming from Langley, Abbotsford and Chilliwack. If you have/need ride sharing arrangements from your community, please email Donna .

You can get there by taking the 351 Crescent Beach bus from Burrard Stn, it is a 46-min ride plus 3-min. connecting bus from there. BUT, there will be a shuttle (thanks to the Livable Region Coalition) from the 351 bus drop drop off to the Hall. The C76 leaves Ladner Exchange once an hour at :30 and leaves Scottsdale Mall once an hour at :50. The bus stops right at the hall going each direction.

So the season of protest from the usual left wing suspects begins. Chudnovsky is seeking publicity,
Uncle Raife is wanting to do more honking.

One only has to read the comments to see the
level of understanding about the project.

They are also forgetting one thing. Most of the
public are for the project and aren't supportive
of the xenophobic Vancouver based opposition.

Betty K. was arrested for ignoring a court order,
not because she was in opposition to the Eagleridge Bluffs project of the Sea to Sky Highway. Glad she won't be there to do more screeching.

The bicycle ride from Vancouver will be interesting if it is large numbers.

Bikes aren't allowed in the George Massey Tunnel.

They'll have to use Kevin's Cycle Shuttle to go through. That will take time.

The gatewaysucks.org website is obvously left wing, originates from squeegeemedia. Surprised
it took this long for the reading public to be aware since the website was registed in December 2006.

But it will be interesting to see what happens on the 6 o'clock news on BCTV.

So the blacktop dinosaurs are getting testy now that the people are once again demanding green solutions.

And isn't it just cute that Falcon's ministry can continue sitting on all the details rather than engaging in an open and honest debate on the merits of yet more internal combustion engines spewing toxins into the air.

In fact, delay, deny and confuse have become the hallmarks of Falcon's tenure in Transportation and Highways.

Frankly, I don't know why Carole James is having difficulties on this file. It suggests she too is prepared to pay only lip service to the real issue of climate change if it means losing a few votes from the paving crews.

"So the blacktop dinosaurs are getting testy now that the people are once again demanding green solutions."

The people are also demanding more efficient transportation sytems and that doesn't nessesarily mean riding a ten speed bike everywhere. The roads have to be kept up.

Amazing that those honking against this project
didn't honk loudly when the Inland Island Highway
(an NDP project) being built.

"And isn't it just cute that Falcon's ministry can continue sitting on all the details rather than engaging in an open and honest debate on the merits of yet more internal combustion engines spewing toxins into the air."

The details are available and the project still
has to go through another round of public consulations. The next round will be the specific
design alignments, concepts and configurations available at Open Houses.

Be there when it happens at the nearest one near you.

"In fact, delay, deny and confuse have become the hallmarks of Falcon's tenure in Transportation and Highways."

And it wasn't when Harry Lali was Minister? That genius didn't spend extra money to make the HOV lane reversible so guess what? Vehicles idling from 176th Street to 152nd spewing toxins.

"Frankly, I don't know why Carole James is having difficulties on this file. It suggests she too is prepared to pay only lip service to the real issue of climate change if it means losing a few votes from the paving crews."

The reason reason she is having difficulties with
it, is because she doesn't want to understand it.

So David Chudnovsky will be there representing the East Vancouver Yuppies whose homes are only worth $500,000, as opposed to $800,000 on the Westside. So what?

Where is the local NDP MLA, Guy Gentner? Where are Harry Bains, Bruce Ralston, and Jagrup Brar?

The presence of the CAW helps to explain a few things in terms of Carol James dilemna on this. But I agree totally with Roadway Roddy that the opposition to this project is entirely fake, witness the fact that none of this came up over the Island Hwy or the Coquihalla, and very little over Hwy 99, or Sea-to-Sky as it's called. But then the latter project benefits some of the richest property owners in BC and many of the so-called environmentalists, so they don't want to make a major fuss about it.
