Kim Haakstad, one of the federal Liberal's most reliable workhorses, will soon be carrying some extra saddlebags. The former party executive director has been named the provincial tour director for Stephane Dion in the coming election. Ms. Haakstad was also the British Columbia returning officer during the recent Liberal leadership race.
Those provincial tours have to be one of the most useless things in camapigns. They were once good, with the priority given for the leader to visit local riding campaign offices visit a local business or industrial plant, a farm or something, or at least visit those volunteers in the campaign offices in key winnable ridings.
But now they've turned into extremely controlled
things, with carefully planned media events, and
the leader rarely gets out to visit key ridings
and meet the volunteers helping to get his candidate elected.
Mostly there are visits to safe ridings or worse
ridings of a Minister (if it was a decision point,
I'd leave vists to Minister's ridings out and focus on visits to local winnable ridings instead).
There's the local rallies, but too many of those
interrupt the work schedule of the campaigns, and the same people end up going to those things anyway.
The provincial tours can be fun to watch, those political hacks suddenly getting into being self-important fools, while the real work is done out in the ridings.
Some of those hacks grated positions on the provinical tour wouldn't last two days out there in the field in a riding that is -10% to +5% for the party.
I've known a few who have done very little more
than layout who gets what seat on the bus.
Hiopefully the Liberals will be smarter than the COnservatives and let a few well deserving volunters have a spot on the provincial tour or at least be the local people attached to it.
The Conservatives seemed to be way too elitist on
that sort of thing. But hopefully they'll change too.
