Public Eye has obtained an undated photograph showing Newton-North Delta federal Conservative candidate Paul Brar attending an event with Joel Volpe - who recently ran for the federal Liberal leadership - and Grit parliamentarian Sukh Dhaliwal. Asked for comment, Mr. Brar said "I've been a member of the (Conservatives) for the past 16 to 18 months." But before that he was friends with the Liberals. "We were getting together. And everything was happening the way we wanted it." But now Mr. Brar feels the community “can do better in the Conservative Party of Canada because they’re better on crime, they’re better on accountability and they’ve shown it.”
On Wednesday morning, Mr. Brar denied having been involved with Mr. Dhaliwal's past nomination or election campaigns. Later in the day, though, Mr. Brar said he couldn’t remember whether he had supported Mr. Dhaliwal - who represents Newton-North Delta - in 2004. But he spent most of the 2005 election in Conservative candidate Phil Eidsvik's campaign office. A copy of the aforementioned photograph will be published in tomorrow's edition of 24 hours
Where are all of the real conservatives - I am tired of Liberal's minor league players coming to the conservatives.
Why leak the photo now? Better to wait until the nomination is over to show Mr. Brar's true colors.
Obviously this is from one of his nomination opponents.
Hey, I spent a lot of time recruiting Liberals to run as Conservatives in the Lower Mainland and I don't much like your mudslinging. Heather Stilwell had to be stopped.
Do you realize how difficult it is to ban one candidate in New West Coquitlam for not being a Party member for 6 members so that I can acclaim my candidate who has not been a Party member for 6 months?
I delayed nominations all over this country so that I can control everything! These petty serf complaints do not concern me as I am Douglas Finley!
Once a Liberal always a Liberal. This guy is no better than Jean Chretien and all the other money stealing Libranos. No thank you. I want a real Conservative representing me.
I find it interesting when people attempt to deny past affiliations. I cannot respect someone when they just seem to turn at the most oppurtune time. I respect those who change at times when the leadership changes in a very definitive way such as the Progressive Conservative Party and how it no longer exists. The candidate does not seem to have a well articulated position on why he left, heck he doesn't seem to even remember it. I would much rather see what the other candidates have to offer.
Does this guy think everyone is an idiot, not understanding what they are up to? I hope there is not a gentleman's agreement here. Don't tell me it has not been done before, try Vancouver South...
About two years ago Conservative columnist Colby Cosh got a few paces ahead of events, saying that as overall Liberal fortunes turned down under the weight of scandal, there would eventually be an acceleration in the downturn when leaders in the immigrant and ethnic communities decided it was time to switch horses. Is Brar an example of Cosh's prediction finally materializing?
No Budd
I think it is simply a case of the Indo Canadian Community in Surrey hedging their bets and wanting an MP representing their voice in Ottawa. There is no Party loyalty here at all. Like any political group they want to back a winner. What better way to ensure victory than to back "all" the parties.
Speaking of former Liberals, this is certainly of interest...Maybe Mr. Brar would do well to learn from the Emerson example
Emerson's regrets:
Today's MacLeans - Mar 5th edition -
Capital Diary, p 10. from comments made at the Canadian Arab Business Council annual dinner -
"When (Emerson) took the podium, he said that when he told Bill Graham he was going to leave the Liberals and cross the floor, the interim leader told him that he might regret it and to think twice. Emerson shocked the crowd when he said he wished he had listened to Graham."

Jeez, Louise.
Almost didn't believe it when I first read it so had to check for myself. I wonder what will come of this? Has this been out for long?
It seems that no one has done any real research on paul brar.

Obviously someone is affected by too much sugar in other words too much riding the "white horse".
Whoever wrote it should really cut down on the sugar
This guy probably had two two many bowls of Count Chocula.
He ain't Doug Finlay.
I don't quite know what I think of this Brar character. I mean, in my time, when a Conservative ran for office they knew what they wanted to do with the country.
I think ,all the intellectuals out their should make distinction between a member signed for the nomination process (as happened in Paul Brar 's case) and elected member of parliament switching parties for personal gains. Most of the the time one family member , signs on behalf all the othrer members of the family and most of the family members even do'n't remember even they are party members or not?,and to be become a party member 50% of the times is not you like the Liberal Party rather than you are friend of someone , to whom ,you like to support to win nomination process, but in this case Sukh's disclosure ,a two weeks before his nomination that Paul Brar was a liberal two years ago and helped him in his compaign is disgraceful and nothing more than smear compaign tactics against would be nominated candidate for the conservative party and it is not going to help him at all but will backfire against him,I know Paul is honest hardworking guy from last one decade that he will do better than what is expected of him as next conservative candidate from Newton-North delta.
I wonder what would happen if a Liberal and a Conservative each leaked a copy of memberships lists in Newton North Delta to the the intrepid Mr. Holman... I bet there would be many hundreds (thousands?) of names on both of those lists. And, since the Conservative sign-ups could be traced to whoever sold them the cards, who knows? It might be grounds for dismissal of a candidate or two! I'm not thinking of anybody in particular, but it would be a worthwhile comparison, don't ya think?
