Vancouver Quadra parliamentarian Stephen Owen's decision not to run in the next election has federal Conservatives re-calculating their chances of taking that riding. And some Tories have starry-eyed ambitions to run a supernova candidate in the upscale constituency - such as man in motion Rick Hansen. When asked for comment on that talk, Rick Hansen Foundation senior communications manager Sarah Fugiyama said "I can tell you he doesn't intend to enter politics at this time. And, as you know, he enjoys his work and remains committed to work here with the foundation and, obviously, with his family. I know he's always been flattered by the suggestion over the years. But he's very much focused on his ongoing pursuit of research and accessible communities."
Last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced his government was contributing $30 million toward the Spinal Cord Injury Translational Research Network, established by the foundation.
Conservative Council founder and chair Rick Pederson is already seeking for the Tory nomination in Vancouver Quadra. Back in November, University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business law division lecturer Deborah Meredith told Public Eye she's "seriously thinking" about joining the race. And, today, The Vancouver Sun's Peter O'Neil quoted Conservative election campaign co-chair John Reynolds as saying "a lot of people" are phoning Industry Minister and Vancouver Kingsway parliamentarian David Emerson suggesting he run in Vancouver Quadra in the next election.
We need a fine family man like Rick Peterson as the MP for Quadra. He is a candidate that cares about the community. Unlike other potential candiates Rick has a plan and a vision. He also doesn't waffle,he has wanted to run in this riding for a long time and has been working hard at it for months. Quadra needs an MP like Rick Peterson who is not afraid to commit himself. Those qualities will represent the riding well in Ottawa.
Apparently the national conservative campaign chairman, John Renyolds disagrees.
"We need a fine family man ...
I really do hope this isn't a thinly veiled appeal to homophobic sentiments. Beyond that, if Peterson's wife left him, ... would he suddenly be a less capable candidate for MP?
Other than the idiotic ramblings of the very senile (yes, Buddly, that means you--wher on Earth did you draw homophobia-a contrived slander-from Mr. Bridge's comment?????? Forget I asked.....)
Rick Peterson is indeed a very decent guy with a clear vision and a super profile, inside the party. He does not have the profile, extra-party, that would win. Owen would have waxed him two to one.
Rick Hansen has been touted as a candidate for Quadra for many moons. I can remember trying to stir this up as far back as '88, but nothing doing. Plus, Rick has lived in Richmond for a fairly long time and has no ties to Quadra, has never lived in Quadra and never worked in Quadra. I have always had a problem with parachute candidates.
However, that said, Hansen would make a formidable candidate anywhere just based on his international profile and genuine, congenial nature.
Maybe we'll finally get a wheelchaired politician, after all, who will talk about substantive policy and be a doer and not constantly remind us he is in a chair.....instead of the reverse...
Budd, unbelievable. If you read any of my other posts ,you would know I don't thinly veil anything.Get real!
Maybe Quadra will get whoever Reynolds wants.
I rather hope Emerson slinks away to Quadra to run there. It'll be amusing to see him go down to defeat in his own neighbourhood.
Reynolds will push the Emerson issue hard. Its Davey's last chance at resurrecting his political career. If he can't run and win now, he'll always be remembered as the idiot who through away a lifetime political career (with a trajectory aimed at least at becoming Premier of this province at the very least) by screwing around with democracy and raising the ire of not just my riding but the entire city.
No doubt both Reynolds and Emerson are too arrogant to believe that Emerson's stink extends far beyond Vancouver--Kingsway's borders. I'm rather counting on it.
Mr. Watkins,
Get a life...what Emerson did was nothing more than what other, including Winston Chruchill, have done historically.
Big deal? He should have never run in bloody Kingsway anyway.
Don't you burn crosses over there? You clearly in-breed.....
It won't matter where Emerson runs in the GVRD, he will still lose. His floor-crossing was big news in constituencies of people well outside of the "politically aware" and it will motivate these people to get out and vote for no reason other than to vote against him.
