Warhorse to leave greener pastures?

There's no such thing as mandatory retirement in politics. So it will come as no surprise to our readers that some federal Liberals would like to see former environmental minister David Anderson make another run for the party in Victoria. But what does Mr. Anderson have to say about those moonlight desires? In an interview with Public Eye, he told us "There's been all sorts of talk - the same talk you've heard. But I've consistently said I'm happy doing what I am doing. And, also, having been fired by (then Prime Minister) Paul Martin for my strong views on the environment, I imagine nobody really wants me." So the chances of him running are "very unlikely. You never say never. In politics I learned that. But I think I'm getting pretty close to that."

Hmmm .... would this by any chance be the same David Anderson who was Environment Minister and a cabinet minister who repeatedly did nothing to end the pumping of raw sewage into the waters off Victoria for decades?

Perhaps Mr. Floatie would comment on whether Anderson was fired for his "strong views on the environment"?

Certainly something smells very strong on this one.

The NDP mouthpieces have much bigger problems than worrying about the return of David Anderson.

Leger: Con 35% Lib 32% Ndp 13% Grn 9%
Decima: Lib 33% Con 32% Ndp 13% Grn 9%
Ipsos: Lib 37% Cons 33% Ndp 13% Grn 5%

13 points is what you get for proping up a neocon government that is the antithesis of everything newdemocrats are supposed to support.

So true...Bill....so true.
Liberals are just a bunch of hypocrits, and having Dion as the Liberal Party leader is the best that could've happened to Conservatives or New Democrats.

The only reason David Anderson is not running is because there is simply no chance in hell for liberals to win the riding. There is no space for antiques like him in Dion's cabinet anyway. It is just another riding liberals will lose in the next election.

"His Royal Highness" David Anderson, for ten years Canada's top generator of political-green-house-gases.
Methinks his firing by Martin had more to do with his LPC leadership fence-sitting.

Le retour de David Anderson est impossible. Denise Savoie est invincible.

"Strong views" - what a Freudian slip by Mr. Hot Air Balloon!

I agree with Bill and others that David Anderson's record as Environment Minister was flawed, rather notably actually, but his refusal to be part of the package in terms of forcing Greater Victoria to treat its effluent.

However, being raised in Victoria I do appreciate that there is intense local opposition in the Capital Region to the additional expense involved, and while that strain of public opinion may be wrong and dangerous, it is something that practical politicians of all stripes have to take into their overall calculus. I don't know off hand that many of the NDPers who've been elected around the Capital Region over the years have been too loud in terms of demanding full treatment immediately.

However, on many other issues Anderson was a better environment minister than one Stephane Dion. And Dion is supposed to be riding an environmental white horse, ably assisted by Elizabeth May and the Suzuki Foundation and other environmental NGOs.

So what does it add up to when Anderson refuses to run on the Dion Liberal ticket, citing differences on environmental issues with Paul Martin??? Is this Anderson speak for "Dion is in reality a clone of Paul Martin, his environmental schtick is a total scam, and if you don't believe me just ask Mark Marissen"?

Wow! The New Democrats are all over this one. Must have struck a nerve. Perhaps it's becasue you realize that David would breeze to an easy victory in Victoria becasue he is well liked, well respected and a man who symbolizes the issue of the hour - the environment.

Who's the Victoria MP again? Oh right, Denise Savioe. Haven't heard her mentioned at all since the last election...Quite a force in federal politics she is.

David Anderson a 'warhorse'???

More like "No Trick Pony".

A. Denise who? (good strategy though, hard to criticize when you do absoutly nothing) well done
B. David Anderson, in my opinion, is by far the most arrogant of politicians
C. If Anderson runs, I see many Liberals running in the opposite direction. The fact he even commented on this shows he misses the spotlight.
D. The libs will win back Victoria, kind of hard not to when the sitting NDP MP has single handedly accomplished, well, nothing.

All great politicians end in failure.

David Anderson is an old horse that's better put out to pasture pulling a wagon for the kid's ride
on the Victoria Day Long weekend and after that,
being a horse to put keep the saddle on to retain it's shape.

Billy is quite wrong in stating that Denise Savoie has not been visible since the last election. On November 22nd her private member's Bill C303, the Early Learning and Child Care Act passed second reading in the House of Commons and went to Committee.

If Billy is to ignorant to know this, that's not a failing on the part of Denise Savoie.

Just saw Denise Savois on the local TV last evening. Seems there was not much planning regarding passport application. The line was almsot around the corner. As the local MP she was there and no doubt will be after Steve to get the office up to speed to handle the folks who have only one place to get a passport on Vancouver Island.

Wasn't David the MP for this town for a number of years. What did he do? In my view his claim to fame would be his desire to see double hulled tankers just offshore. But his neatest endevour was to try and sue the government when he lost his patronagage job when Lying Brian took over. David did show up to encourage the local kids at the rowing events. What he did in Ottawa is a bit of a mystery. He won't be running again

If David Anderson returns to politics, what will his campaign song be? The theme from The Godfather Part II?

"...for my strong views on the environment, I imagine nobody really wants me".

Really, quite a self depreciating, sad & pathetic statement about the man - by the man.

I think the Liberal strategy in this thread has been to divert attention from the real message of Anderson's statement. A vote on non-confidence in non-environmentalist Stephane Dion.
