Here at Public Eye, we're still betting Staples McDannold Stewart lawyer Troy DeSouza will be reprising his role as the federal Conservative candidate in Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca. But some local party members are hoping former Esquimalt-Metchosin Liberal backbencher Arnie Hamilton will run for that nomination. Mr. Hamilton, who was a policeman before becoming a politician, had planned to seek re-election to the provincial legislature. But a September 2004 tumble at the University of Northern British Columbia - which resulted in a serious brain injury - forced him to reverse that decision.
Apparently, both former and current BC Lib. MLA's are all running for the nominations in various ridings that conservatives have a chance of winning, what's next, Mary Polak running against Sukh Dhaliwal? (It will fun to pit Surrey councillors against one another.).
Given the current poll having BC NDP almost tying BC Liberal, I dont see too many current MLA's resigning to run for MP's. But someone like Virginia Greene may be a good addition to the Harper government. We will just have to wait and see.
Frankly I am skeptical that any of these BC Liberal to Federal Conservative candidate rumours will actually materialize. Is Lorne Maynecourt really going to run against Hedy Fry in a general election? This would split the Yaletown-Coal Harbour Yuppie vote and allow the NDP increased odds of beating both.
Mary Pollak? I don't see that as a move to lessen the Conservatives' problems with the middle of the road vote. Virginia Greene might be a possibility in that she doesn't have a provincial MLA job she has to give up in order to take a gamble at winning a federal seat, ... but in what seat is she supposed to run? Vancouver Centre? Does that mean she opposes Maynecourt for the Conservative nomination, and then runs against Fry, facing the same split the Yuppie vote problem as Maynecourt would have done?
The bottom line is that the only person who really thinks that federal Liberal fortunes in BC are on the rise now that the Liberals have lost power is Mark Marissen. (OKay, maybe Jonathan Ross and Terry Glavin as well.) Over drinks he can spin a tale to support this theory, but people who have day jobs and mortganges will be rethinking the sales pitch when they are sober. And that includes the three million voters in this province.
