Mr. Mayencourt goes to Ottawa?

Headlining provincial Liberal backbencher Lorne Mayencourt is thinking about running for the federal Conservatives in the next election. In an interview Public Eye, Mr. Mayencourt confirmed he was approach last year about becoming a Tory candidate - possibly in Vancouver Centre or Vancouver South. But, before he even considers submiting his nomination papers, the Vancouver-Burrard MLA wants to ensure his Safe Schools Act is passed. "I feel that's the major of piece of business that I have yet to accomplish," he says.

Haha, he is one of the few true backbenchers left in the Gordon's big tent party. I think he will be the third straight gay tory to run dagainst Hedy Fry shall he run in that riding. I just find it funny how real liberals are now deciding to join the conservatives. The sign of a conservative majority government is showing.

I have to admit this certainly surprises me. I have assumed up to now that Maynecourt was a Liberal at both levels, and that he and Hedy Fry worked the area together for most purposes, such as beating back Svend Robinson and Tim Stevenson.

So FHK.. what's this fetish with gay people of yours?

Ever consider consider that Mayencourt is a person?

I guess not.

Finally! Someone with some sense--well said redgrit. I loathe people who throw in the fact that someone might be "openly gay". Who gives a rat's derriere? I am openly straight, I am openly a bourbon drinker...again, who cares?

It is high time that we lose the labels and get down to business...while I have been very critical of Lorne in the past, I think his efforts in Burrard speak for themselves. He's done a very good job as MLA, with a very difficult constitutency and I admire him for that. Now, as for being surrounded by some of the biggest morons, at the constituency lapdog level, well, that's a matter of record.

But I, too, wonder how he can run against Hedy Fried, when many of her apparatchiks worked feverishly for Lorne provincially. Lots of overlap.

This also speaks to the occasional insanity that plagues federal parties. Regardless of 'loyalty' (does that really exist in politics?) why would the Fiberals allow Fried and Owen such plum ridings, when they could be filled by people who actually know what they are doing and could be front row Cabinet members?

--should they win, of course.....

This is a shock for me. How does Mayencourt think that he could possibly beat Hedy? (Obviously, he has no shot at even coming close to beating Ujjal) He barely (and I mean barely) beat Stevenson last time around, and that guy campaigned like a dead dog. For him to take out Mme. Cross, it would take a miracle (ie. another Svend run, or maybe a Jim Green vanity run).

Ah, that he would win though. Hedy is as Hedy does, and a Mayencourt Conversative holding that seat would make put it back to the (non-Hedy) grits or dippers next time around. Alas, my guess is that this little announcement or interest is a vanity thing ("hey world, I'm a Conservative!"), and that he doesn't even try. (Then again, if he does try just for the hell of it, it just means that he takes a few months off from work, er wait, he does work doesn't he? Oh right, he's a Liberal MLA!)

Mayendork. Do people still say that? It still has a very nice ring to it, no?

By provincial law, a MLA has to resign to run in a federal election. There may be recruiters at his door but I doubt Lorne is dumb enough to gamble his political career on a longshot.

Puzzled that a provincial Liberal would think of running as a federal Tory?
Why?
That would simply mean the MLA has opted to move from the dominant right-wing power base in BC to the dominant right-wing power base in Ottawa.

It sounds like a bunch of auto idiots arguing about the relative superiority of a Pontiac over a Chevrolet. Used car sales types must dream of getting customers with such depth of understanding.

"Puzzled that a provincial Liberal would think of running as a federal Tory?"

Why not? There are many federal Tory supporters in the BC Liberal Party. Mike DeJong, John Van Dongen, Claude Richmond, Richard Neufeld, Harry Bloy and Kevin Falcon to name a few.

On the other side of the equation, you have your Carole Taylor, Wally Oppal, Kathrine Whittred, and others who are definately federal Liberal.

"That would simply mean the MLA has opted to move from the dominant right-wing power base in BC to the dominant right-wing power base in Ottawa."

"It sounds like a bunch of auto idiots arguing about the relative superiority of a Pontiac over a Chevrolet."

Pontiac Bonneville station wagons were much better than Chevrolet Impala station wagons in terms of engine options and power.

"Used car sales types must dream of getting customers with such depth of understanding."

So it is with the political hack type community, which in many ways is worse than used car sales types.

Wrongo Blue Boy. There ain't no way in hell that Mike deJong is
a Conservative! He's red all the way.

Red in a Conservative strong hold as Abbotsford?

Seems to be one of a very few.

Blueboy said, "Red in a Conservative strong hold as Abbotsford? Seems to be one of a very few."

You'd be surprised. In addition Patty Sahota was an organizer for the Bob Rae Campaign here in BC.

Blimey, I hope this is true - Hedy will stomp him into the ground. He's gonna have to defend Harper's behaviour on childcare and women's rights, Campbell's treatment of teachers and healthcare workers, oh, and his own little outburst in the legislature last year about MLAs' salaries. Maybe he's realised that Vancouver Burrard's had enough of him and he's jumping before he's pushed.

Vanity run sounds like a possibility.

Lorne has hung on tightly to Carole Taylor's skirt pre and post election, she's helped his image. With all due respect to Ms. Taylor, she is not just in need of new shoes, but new glasses. Lorne, I think, has a need to enhance his ego and his pocketbook and will do whatever it takes to achieve same. His stance on MLA salaries, came as no surprise.

What has he done for Vancouver Burrard? He's spent taxpayer dollars seeking a solution to the homelessness and drug problem that we are plagued with. I've yet to see anything develop from those findings. Surely he must be tripping over people sleeping on Davie and Denman streets like the rest of us. I guess he was just waiting for Sullivan to finally admit Vancouver is out of control - and took the "let him deal with" it approach. Perhaps something would have been done by now had Christy Clark been mayor - another skirt he has hung onto in the past.

Frankly, I hope he runs for the Feds and wins - who needs him.
