Former British Columbia Marijuana Party general counsel and campaign manager Kirk Tousaw isn't ruling out a run for the federal New Democrat nomination in Vancouver Quadra. When asked about rumours to that affect, Mr. Tousaw told Public Eye, "I'm always interested in seeing what avenues can be taken to further progressive politics in this country." Although "it's probably premature to speculate on (such a run) at this point." Mr. Tousaw later added that, while he's done work for the Marijuana Party and continues to have a solicitor-client relationship with them, he's always been a member of the New Democrats. Vancouver Quadra is presently held by Liberal parliamentarian Stephen Owen.
We're down to 10% in the polls and this is the last thing the party needs right now. Hello?! Why would a marijuana guy want to run for the NDP. We are the party of WORKING people, not pot smoking louts. I'm so tired of the freaky left thinking the NDP is THEIR party. Grab a piece of reality.
Hey, I don't see the big deal...Marc-Boris Saint-Maurice was leader of the Bloc Pot and quit to join the Liberals, and was a key Dion supporter in the leadership...it makes sense to me that the activists in the single issue parties would end up where they may have some actual influence...face it, even under the most extreme PR systems, these parties would never have a seat, but there's no reason why the mainstream parties shouldn't cherry pick from them.
Kirk Tousaw is an articulate, smart lawyer and I am glad to see him run in Quadra. He is the exact opposite of a "pot smoking lout" - he is finishing his law phd at UBC and is a member of the BC Civil Liberties. I would rather see 10 Kirk Tousaws run than one more member of the Fed, BCTF, or GEU - it's time to mix in new blood, new ideas, new interests with the labour base.
Dagmar, grab a piece of reality. It's not 1960 anymore - the NDP can't win parroting Jim Sinclair's every word. A progressive poltiical party needs to be broad, which means being in the interests not just of working people, but pushing for drug and criminal law reform, of which Kirk is primed to do.
A young, smart, and progressive candidate - sometimes it seems like the only party without them is the NDP. Throw that hat in the ring and give 'em hell, Kirk. I'll be voting him.
You're right, Vancouver Kid, it isn't the 1960's anymore, which means it's time to stop smoking the stuff and get to work!!! By the way, which candidates in the Federal NDP parrot Jim sinclair or are union activists? The Federal NDP would be so lucky as to find a candidate who holds a union job. The BC Fed would be a moderating influence on the Federal NDP if anything. At least it is a group of sane people who hold jobs. I'd rather pander to them than anti-poverty or druggie activists.

Think the NDP needs a piece of reality. Anyone who works for a paycheque be it pipefitter, network adminstrator, clerk, or sales manager or
operations manager or even the owner of a corporation is WORKING and they are people so they too are WORKING people.
The Conservative Party and our Liberal Party can also be correctly called the party of WORKING people.
This ain't the 1970's anymore.
To say that only union people and NDP supporters
are WORKING people is garbage.
The Liberals?! The party of working people? Give me a break. The party of sandal-wearing, Volvo-driving, hashish bare-knuckling, baba ghanouj eating freaks? That's more like it. And the Conservatives are the party of Bobos at the top and acne-faced dungeons and dragons players at the bottom. Face it, the NDP is the only party for working people. Too bad the Freaky Left has been trying to take it over for their own purposes. Gotta give them credit -- they know a good thing when they see it.

Yeh right, and look what they did for working people in B.C. Huge overruns on projects they couldn't manage, and preferred union wages for
NDP friendly folk on highway projects.
Lots of union people drive Volvos.
Dagmar, it's not the 1970's anymore.
Have yet to see alot of jeans and plaid logger shirts at NDP conventions.
What the heck is baba ghanouj? I do like snacking
on the odd somosa when at political events thought.
