So what, you may wonder, happened at parks board commissioner Allan De Genova's news conference this morning? Did he rejoin the Non-Partisan Association or become a Vision Vancouverite. Well, the answer is neither. Mr. De Genova announced he'll be serving out the remainder of his term in office as an independent.
Seems like alot of fuss over a simple positioning statement.
A news release to the local papers would have been enough rather than this publicity seeking excercise.
I'm not from Vancouver. Can someone please tell me why this guy successfully seeks and gets (at least here) so much attention? I'm failing to grasp the significance of these "De Genova Brushes His Teeth" stories.
"Can someone please tell me why this guy successfully seeks and gets (at least here) so much attention?"
Because, while the number of people who follow Vancouver city politics in detail may not be large, we tend to be a little obsessive-compulsive. Sean knows his audience.
More seriously, it's about the possibility that the ruling NPA slate might be starting to split apart (if not quite in the same way that COPE did), and the possibility that Vision Vancouver might capitalize on this.
Although in pulling a Garth Turner, de Genova has let his audience down by being utterly anticlimactic. Reminds me of Bill Vander Zalm in early 1990, when he gave a televised address to deliver the important earth-shaking news that he was staying on as premier.
Allan De Genova is one of the hardest working commisioners I have met. And people should be informed as to what he is doing....The media really didn't have to show up if they didn't want to. Are you somewhat jealious of Allan's attention?.......He has served the community well for many years, and people should know what the NPA is really doing.
