Earlier, we reported federal Liberal leadership candidate Michael Ignatieff would be attending a fundraiser at The Vancouver Club. Tickets for that reception are $45 at the door, with "tax-deductible proceeds" providing "assistance to young delegates to attend the leadership convention." But wait a minute. According to party regulations, leadership contestants can't incur any direct or indirect campaign expanses "for the purpose of facilitating in any manner whatsoever, including by way of subsidization of registration fees, transportation, accomodation or other costs, the presence at the Convention of any delegate or alternative entitled to attend the Convention." So what's going on?
In an interview, Mr. Ignatieff Western Canada spokesman David Hurford explained the donations at that reception won't be made out to the campaign. They'll be made out to the party and earmarked to cover the cost of a specific youth delegate's fee. For example, Mr. Hurford said, "If I want to make a contribution, what I'd do is I'd write a cheque to the Liberal Party of Canada for the express purpose of Sean Holman's delegate fees. Sean Holman presents that (cheque) when he brings his registration in. The party accepts that. David Hurford gets a tax receipt. That's how it works. And that's how it works for all the campaigns. Campaigns are allowed to promote events that other people are sponsoring for delegates."
The Iggy campaign has been a disaster in BC, but the disaster must fall on the shoulders of Bill Cheema and Hurford.
I think he is the only east indian organizer that had trouble signing people up, maybe the Iggy camp shoud have asked Amar Randhawa to help out.
Amar knows the community and the leaders and has great connections into the East Indian media as well. He has done wonders for Carole Taylor.
Both Hurford and Cheema seem to have no clue about BC and the issues here.
Well, in their defence, he hasn't exactly been flawless this campaign.
Apparently they are having so much trouble getting people to attend that I hear they are giving tickets away for free.
For more information on Iggy, please read Don Martin in today's National post.
Sam (or whatever your real name is),
You clearly don't know Bilal Cheema very well. He is very much in tune with BC issues and has demonstrated excellent organizational ability on many occasions over the past several years. As "Fake Name" suggests, I think it is unfair to heap all the blame on his and David's shoulders for the admittedly poor showing in BC for Mr. Ignatieff.
As a Kennedy supporter, I still wish that Bilal were part of our team. I look forward to December when we will be working together again. To suggest that he is "done" as an "operative" in BC is not only inaccurate but seriously underestimates him.

Also in their defense, national Ignatieff HQ didnt even get into BC until literally the last minute. As are result, other campaigns got to the minorities first.
Geez factsonly - I seem to recall that Ignatieff was the first candidate out to Victoria. Hardly "literally the last minute."
Not fair to lump Cheema and Hurford together ... Bilal's ok; it's Hurford who is the weak link.
In fact, rumour has it Bilal's father Iqbal was a close runner up for one of the LPCBC delegate spots. His longtime contribution made him a strong competitor for a spot despite the fact he supports Ignatieff and nobody on the executive does. Iqbal and Bilal have supporters out there that would surprise many.
