Premier Gordon Campbell dished out double helpings of news at the provincial Liberal's biennial convention - announcing a $1,000 post-secondary education investment for each new baby born in British Columbia, a ban on smoking in indoor public spaces and lower taxes. But some of the province's most prominent news outlets didn't send reporters to cover the proceedings. Curiously, The Globe and Mail, The Vancouver Sun, The Canadian Press/Broadcast News, BCTV and CKNW were all no-shows.
There isn't much to report, since much of the convention were just party party events. The Policies were not real resolutions as such as they were worded as resolutions, and didn't deviate much from the status quo.
In short there's not much newsworthy except for the Premier's speech.
The Convention more like a rah-rah rally for Campbell und eine Oktoberfest drinkenfest sponsored by Falcon and Mayencourt.
Pete, don't forget to give a shout out to the Molson-sponsored BCYL soiree and the Canadian Beer council's after-party at the Lakeside. Oddly enough, after a night of binge drinking, one would expect greasy spoons like Denny's to be far better prepared for the barrage of tipsy politicos with the munchies late into the night.
Media playing no-show to something they definitely would have covered if it was in the Lower Mainland area is not good as far as I'm concerned because it will not do anything to encourage the party to take these conventions around the province to give exposure and highlight the great things going on in the different parts of the province like they should.
hey shawn,
it should be noted you were busy attending the conversation on health when there was real announcements being made in the seminar room beside, where the bcyl held it's AGM. As well as the only real politics this weekend occured in that room as a torch was based on to a new executive for the young liberals. look for these guys to continue building off of dallas's successes but also use some of that emotion shown during the premiers address, and o yah my spelling is the result of a shitty NDP school system that was brought up in for all those who were wondering. on a further point i would like the premier to also come out against the rule that says u have to be inder 26 to be a young liberal, i am personally young at heart just as the premier and i believe that i can keep up with BCYP partys even at my age.
