CKNW bills its newscast as "live, local and late-breaking." But, yesterday - when prominent political analyst Norman Spector called federal Liberal parliamentarian Belinda Stronach a "bitch" on-air - the station didn't run a news story about the gaffe until 3:30 in the afternoon. That's five hours after the comment was made on the Bill Good Show and four hours after Public Eye reported on the incident.
In related news, Mr. Good said today on his show, "I didn't anticipate (Mr. Spector's) comments would end up on the Mike Duffy Live program and the CTV national news. I didn't expect the story to lead my own newscasts for that matter - and, if you're wondering, that wasn't my decision."
But, yesterday, when confronted with a caller upset Mr. Good "didn't step in and say something" about Mr. Spector's comments, this was the broadcaster's response to a demand that he put the gaffe on the news: "I suspect it will make the news what Norman said. And, if I said nothing, it was in part because I was shocked by what he said. Norman, do you expect to be on the cover of the front page of The Globe and Mail tomorrow?"
I like how the media calls him a former Chief of Staff, something he has not done for quite a while rather than "a Globe and Mail Columnist" which is what he is now.
In passing, how come every one of the questionable appointments and inappropriate comments are coming from the former PCs and not the Reformers?
Because, George, Reformers are too busy at home sharpening their placards for the next anti-abortion rally, and polishing their white patent leather shoes, to be making any thought provoking, intelligent commentary.
Get a life.
Because, George, Reformers are too busy ... to be making any thought provoking, intelligent commentary.
Get a life.
Mr Tsakumis, ... this is a keeper. The next time I call some lady a bitch I will remind her that she has not been insulted, ... Hell no! On the contrary, she is the lucky recipient of thought provoking, intelligent commentary!
thought provoking intelligent commentary? I don't think calling any woman a bitch could be considered intelligent commentary.
And if you think about what he said about breaking up Domi's marriage, he's implying that, if there was an affair between the two of them, it was all Stronach's fault, Domi is not to blame at all.
I think Spectors comments, as well as Mackay's, reflect the sexism that exists within politics epsecailly among men of an older generation.
Back to my original point, I don't think Spector can be accused of ever making any truly intelligent or thought provoking comments, other than provoking me to wonder if he really believes what he says.
Wind,
My travelling this afternoon precludes me from responding at length (lucky you)...but, you're right, referring to just any woman as a bitch is wrong.
But this isn't any woman.
And the implication about Domi's marriage, by all accounts, is correct. She pursued him.
Sexism? You're kidding, right? Mulroney was a "bastard", a "slime bag", said Shrilla Copps...not sexist? C'mon, give your head a shake.
Norman was dead on accurate. His comment stands and those of us who understand it, applaud it, standing.
Alex and George, do you ever pause and proofread your comments prior to posting? If you would, you'd quickly realize how juvenile your replies sound, atleast on this thread. Moreover, do you ever stop to think that your both members of the SAME PARTY, and how insanely stupid this looks to others reading and posting on this site. Currently, the Liberals are the masters of infighting. Quite frankly, it's the LAST thing the CPC needs!
Look, I've had my share of relationships and even punted the odd marriage. Five to be exact. But nobody ever called me a bitch. This is sexist labelling for sure. I didn't even call my fourth ex a "bitch' and she was the one who had a thing for horses. It just wouldn't be right. Norman Spector has issues.
Besides, last time I looked, we men didn't need to be 'tricked' or 'persuaded' to screw around by a 'homewrecker'. We're usually able to come up with the idea ourselves.
As for you guys here who are all on the Norman Spector bandwagon, how many of you have ever had a successsful relationship with a woman (that didn't inflate)? Just curious.
What are there, maybe seven or eight people who read this blog now?
You jumped the shark.
Does the term, "overheated exhuberance" mean anything. I'm not on any bandwagon here, but in light of all going on in the world, people are setting their hair ablaze because of some remarks made by someone who's relevance politically has diminished into the black abyss, yet nary a word at Campbell forcing P3s down everyone's throats, 20 million dollar slush fund for the supposed financially prudent NPA in Vancouver. Ohh nooo... the media has its knickers in a twist over the use of the word "bitch".
Perhaps Norman is somewhat frustrated and let slip something he shouldn't have on the air. It's all hyperbole, and has done nothing but garner ratings for NW, and political commentators. Did the world stop because he called Belinda a bitch? No. However, the raids on the legislature case took a back seat to coverage of this salicious piece of nonsense. In terms of the Domi comments.. yeah it was stupid to say that it was all her.
But then again, people are giving this opinion way yyyyy too much credibility. Stormin' Norman isn't going to apologize to Belinda, or anyone else for making those comments. Much like people do with Holman and public eye online, people tune in to their segments on the Bill Good show or public eye online, to hear Spector and Tieleman's opinions. And analysis. You may not at all agree with it, and that's your right. Fact is this... Mackay started this entire quagmire, with his rental dog woe is me BS after belinda took a hike on him.
He exacerbated it with his mouthing off in the house. And yes, she's a bit of a spotlight hog, and unabashedly so about it. So what? Everyone (Norman included) needs to get over this crap. 4 bills have passed in this parliament, that's it. And no wonder when the people who's business it is to run the country's government are relationship constipated. Let's move on to some other more important topics of discussion.
Okay, I guess what I was really trying to get at, is if Spector is really providing intelligent, thought provoking commentary, couldn't he come up with something more insightful then simply calling her a bitch? He portrays himself as a political analyst, so discuss politics rather than discussing her personal life.
PS A. G. Tsakumis said that she pursued Domi. So what? If Domi wanted to stay with his wife he would have resited her. And how do you know she pursued him? Why do we care? If this was a male politician that was involved in an affair, would there be the same type of media attention?
on further reflection, I must admit I'm a total hypocrite, becasue I can't help but to refer to the honourable member from PGMount Robson in a derogatory way So, really, I don't care what people call each other, freedom of speech and all that stuff,
I've just never liked that Spector guy, and I just couldn't let the insinuation that that was intelligent commentary go.
Sorry for wasting your time.
"I didn't even call my fourth ex a "bitch' and she was the one who had a thing for horses."
Uhh... Dagmar... what kind of "thing" did she have for horses... umm... just for the record...

George the atheist pro-choice Reformer
Tell me Georgie, was it the years wallowing away in Ted White's parliamentary underground layer that made you so resentful towards your PC brethren? Or, like Alex, are you just so utterly full of yourself that you spend every waking moment of your day refreshing Holan's blog waiting anxiously for the chance to put down some anti-social Liberal or a Conservative from the Valley with your pathetic attempt at wit? Until you two learn to grow up and drop the 'tude, go and hang around with the LPC where that type of behaviour is not only condoned, but encouraged by the likes of Rae, Ignatieff, etc.

The country has a freedom of religion policy - see charter of rights
re pro-choice, not an issue before parliament for decades.
re Reformer, that party is dead and so is the populist movement - killed off by Steve Harper.
As for the Spector comments and the topic of this thread, they are rude. Full Stop.
Just an aside.
The other nite I was at the gymn in our local pool, pretending to be doing some weights, just as I sometimes pretend to jog on other nites. I was taking a breather when I looked up at the TV screen which was tuned to the Sports Channel (Cdn version). Some commentator type was sitting behind a desk yakking away. Before I realized why I was doing it, I started laughing at this guy on the screen. And then it hit me. It was Tie Domi.
