Federal Liberal leadership candidate Bob Rae's British Columbia campaign chair Mason Loh's "celebration dinner" invitation may have cost his candidate at least one potential delegate. Yesterday, Public Eye exclusively reported those wanting "admission" to that dinner were instructed by Mr. Loh to "bring the envelope for this invitation to my volunteers at the polling station for stamping before you cast your vote." In an interview, the former Vancouver-Kingsway nomination candidate said that dinner won't violate party regulations forbidding candidates from incurring campaign expenses "for the purpose of facilitating in any manner whatsoever...the presence of any member of the Party at a delegate selection meeting.” But Manuel Pereda - a Rae delegate candidate who says he was recruited by Mr. Loh - told us this morning he has a different opinion.
Explained Mr. Pereda, "As you probably know, I've taken a very strong stance for democracy. That has been my priority. I believe that the Liberal Party is the party I want to be in. But I also believe that the party needs to play by the rules. And I've been demonstrating that. I demonstrated it when I protested Wendy Yuan's nomination. I demonstrated it when I protested David Emerson's defection. And now I am demonstrating it by withdrawing my support for the Bob Rae campaign."
Mr. Pereda, who supported Mr. Loh's decision to appeal the Vancouver-Kingsway nomination meeting results, is the founder of Message in the Air - an organization dedicated to promoting democracy in Canada.
interesting rumour: Dion has made his decision and will be endorsing Kennedy live on national TV during the debate for maximum exposure...
try to confirm, this could mean its over for rae and even iggy
"bring the envelope for this invitation to my volunteers at the polling station for stamping before you cast your vote."
What's the stamping for? Either you get a ticket to this or you don't.
The stamping/checking of ID/distribution of sample ballot process looks like it to make sure that recipients showed up and voted and didnt just show up at the dinner...Seems pretty clear to me.
I guess it's hard for people to change their ways because in politics we have been rewarding bad behaviour for so long that some people think it's normal behaviour. Good for sticking to your principles Manuel Pereda.
So what happens with Manuel's delegate spot? Is he keeping it and just leaving Rae at the second ballot, or is he withdrawing as a delegate? I'd like to know how he knows he's a delegate -- i've been contacting and waiting to hear my fate as a rae delegate but no one has responded.
Dion is running to win. No deals needed at this point, sir. He also has the best growth potential. Would be a good idea to have a Dion-Kennedy ticket, though. New guard would take hold across the land.
Manuel Pereda is not an elected Bob Rae delegate. He didn't get enough votes to win a delegate spot. Could this be why Mr. Pereda is so upset?
Anotherraeguy: the party has released the list of successful delegates to all campaigns. Perhaps you should contact Mason Loh...who will then probably refer you to Alex Swann...who will refer you back to Mason Low...who will refer you to Pam Macdonald.
If Manuel gives up his delegate spot it will be back-filled by another Rae supporter who wants to go as a delegate but wasnt elected.
Unfortunately.
Is this going to turn into Manuel warfare?
To: Sour grapes
I announced the withdrawal of my support prior to any announcement by the Rae camp on what delegates were elected. To my knowledge, they still have not released this information. In fact, if you have this information I suggest you post it here. It doesn’t matter one way or another. I suggest that you have more faith on the motives of ordinary citizens. I am not upset, I am just acting according to my principles. FYI, I was told that I would be a delegate one way or another (elected or appointed). I have also received an email asking me to reconsider. I have no personal motives, nor political aspirations. This is why I can speak my mind freely. I am just an unmuzzled grit interested in renewal.

MThis thread, including the Loh email, should be sent to the Leadership Expenses Committee.
It needs to be signed and sent to a Complaints Officer. From the Rules:
“14.3 Complaints Officers are authorized on behalf of the Committee to do the following: a) receive any written and signed complaint alleging a violation of these Regulations”.
The names of the Complaints Officers are supposed to be made public. The only one publicly identified is Doug Mitchell, who heard made the finding in the Volpe matter.
To be safe, the notice should be signed and faxed to (with a request that it be forwarded to a Complaints Officer and the Leadership Expenses Committee):

Technically speaking ...is offering people dinner many days down the road if they can prove they went to the meeting "facilitating" ... in any manner ... their presence?
From the Rules: "5. No Leadership Contestant shall incur Leadership Campaign Expenses directly or indirectly:
a) for the purpose of facilitating in any manner whatsoever, including by way of subsidization of transportation, accommodation or other costs,
the presence of any member of the Party at a delegate selection meeting contemplated by the Rules of Procedure;"
To: No Fan of These Tactics
I will have to think about this one and consider what is best for the Liberal Party and for democracy. I certainly don’t want to help or damage any of the Liberal leadership contenders anymore than they already have. I am not going soft here, I want to be fair but, in my opinion, what is fair is not always what is best. Democracy may not be served well by a complaint process that will undoubtedly be used for political gain by Mason Loh and Bob Rae’s opponents. Mason may have considered his tactics fair game. He is already paying dearly for his tactics. I am also paying dearly, I have lost a good friend.
