Dead and now buried?

Earlier, we reported would-be Fleetwood-Port Kells federal Conservative nomination candidate Paul Lalli's nomination papers had been rejected by the party's national candidate selection committee. Mr. Lalli appealed that decision. But, last night, national council members rejected that appeal. In an interview with Public Eye, Lalli nomination campaign chair Alex Tsakumis confirmed, "He was disqualified. We're disappointed. And it's sad that the party has treated him so poorly. But there's nothing that can be done without going outside of the party."

This is a disgusting affront to democracy. There are now several thousand people who have been disenfranchised -- perhaps because the party was too afraid that Nina Grewal would bolt and sit as an independent. Paul should be proud of his accomplishments, the National Tory Council should be ashamed of their actions.

I do not believe that the party did any disservice to anyone. Maybe the question should be asked of the "political advisors" such as Gardner why they would not have anticipated this in a Minority Government. Also, maybe they do not know the "community" as well as they think because let's not forget that Lalli was also out organized by well over 1,000 votes. Lalli should take a breath and then keep working he has potential. In politics the small p politics is more important than anything else. Never under estimate anyone.

Its too bad we will never really know how many members the Grewals had or get to see a Nomination contest. I bet they had less than what they said, majority of people in Fleet-wood Port Kells really want Nina out of there.

The next election race will be much closer, Conservative support has declined since they won in January, another at least 2,200 people in the riding have been alienated by the party.

As one of the people who signed up for Paul I will definitely be voting for the Liberal Candidate in the next election, we only need another 400 or so who voted conservative in the last election to do the same and the Grewals will be history as they should be!.

Count on good 'ole BLT to miss the real issue. The Party disqualified Lalli and gave him no reason why it took such action. It would not matter if both Mark Marrison and Colin Metcalfe were on Lalli's team - he never got out of the gate.

I wonder on what basis Lalli appealled if he did not know why he was disqualified in the first place?

If the Party wanted to protect incumbents in a minority government, why not just come out and state that publicly?

We will never know if Nina Grewal outsigned Paul Lalli or if, more importantly, Nina Grewal could have delivered more votes on nomination day.

In the end, if I were Nina Grewal and had indeed outsigned Paul Lalli by 1,000 members, I would have supported Paul Lalli's appeal. The only thing she gained was yet another controversy under the Grewal name.

At least one good result, the folks out in Surrey do not have to worry about Alex Tsakumis making his mark in Surrey.

The end result of all of this is that the party knew heavyweights like Gardner and Tsakumis are power players that are close to the Mayor, Falcon, Hogg and others. With that kind of political thunder, Lalli would have knocked her off and then some. What is really something is that the party never gave the guy a reason for his disqualification and got away with it.

Drover, say what you want about Tsakumis. The fact is he stood up for a good guy against a corrupt process obviously. He has balls that's for sure.

As for Lalli he should just suck it up. He ran honestly and they screwed him. According to all media reports he met with all the provincial big wigs way ahead of the nomination. If the didn;t want him running, they could have told him. They never imagined the support or the negatives against Nina. they never thought about guys like Tsakumis getting into it or bigger local players like Gardner. As soon as they sensed Nina would loose and they couldn't control her or her wacky husband if she was a lame duck MP, they shot Lalli in the back like cowards.

This could have been handled very differently by the party. They really screwed up. The Liberals will take advantage and Fleetwoord goes to the them.

Disappointed or not, life moves on. I hope Lalli shows class and would back a hard-line conservative like Mrs. Grewal. I suspect once we form the majority government, Nina should be safe for probably another decade. Dont worry though Lalli, there are always enough Liberals for us to walk over.
