The Fellowship of Dion?

Yesterday, we reported rumours federal Liberal British Columbia president Jamie Elmhirst would be endorsing leadership candidate Stephane Dion. Last night, those rumours came to pass at the The Grand Taj Banquet Hall, where the Dion campaign was holding a fundraiser. Also endorsing the candidate at that event was former provincial Liberal backbencher Karn Manhas - who was the British Columbia campaign chair for Maurizio Bevilacqua until the Vaughan MP dropped out of the leadership race.

Those in attendance say there were 350 to 400 supporters at the $100 ticket fundraiser - where co-master of cermonies Joyce Murray compared Mr. Dion's leadership bid with Frodo's quest in the Lord of the Rings. Evidently, that comparison has something to do with the fact the candidate phoned and asked for the former provincial cabinet minister's endorsement while she was touring part of the Lord of the Rings set in New Zealand. But we digress.

Meanwhile, in an inteview with your humble organ, Dion national coordinator Mark Marissen addressed rumours floating on Public Eye that the campaign was "giving away tickets to fill the room." Said Mr. Marissen, "There were some tickets that were sponsored by people who that purchased tables. But we're not in the business of giving away tickets. There are other events for that."

The organizers were pissed off that roughly 35 tickets were given out for free. Some of the VIPs gave tickets out to friends and people did not pay. In the end it was not really a big deal, but they certainly did not give out tickets to fill up the room. If anything, the room was overcrowded, and about 15 people didnt have a place to sit.

Surely the endorsement of the powerful Karn Manhas will push Dion over the top.

Wait... ****THE**** Karn Manhas?!?!?!

Yawn.

Although Mr. Dion is just another in the "long line" of liberal intellectual dilettant lawyers I am, nevertheless, giving my full support to Mr. Dion.

Let us not forget that he gave us that most "tolerant" of Canadian Parliamentary Acts - "The Clarity Act". And given the even "sharper" intellectual abilties he demonstated as Environment Minister,I am sure that when he becomes Prime Minister he will be convinced by "Eastern Interests" to impose a large federal carbon tax "at source" - after all his good friend and fellow Liberal Mr. Charest has just announced his intention to do so.

When that happens, we in the West will then have good reason to invoke the Clarity Act to finally leave this horribly dysfunctional federation.

I hate lawyers, and Dion isn't one. He was an academic and did not go to law school.

Manhas can and will move votes. This is a coup for Dion. With the former BC Martinites scattered to Dion, Iggy, Kennedy, Dryden, Brison and Rae it was not a certainty Dion would pick him up. Hat tip Dion.

Congratulations, Jamie, you've officially clarified that just because you hold a non-partisan position doesn't mean you have to be non-partisan.

Hereafter, I think we should all refer to you as the Katherine Harris of the Liberal Party.

Dion comes across a bit of a fruit cake to me. Karn Manhas is really going to move people for him, give me break.

Jamie is one of the last Presidents of the provincial wings to take a stand on the leadership. The president does not administer the voting. The returning officer does. Nothing out of the ordinary.

My God, you are right "I hate lawyers". He has only been an academic before he became a politican. Turns out he has a PHD in Sociology and from France no less! This is even worse then I imagined!

Elmhirst? Manhas? Who cares.

So ... Stephane Dion does know about the pending trials?

Oh. Now I get it. He was a Chretien Liberal. Way to go, Stephane.

Mr. Dion is a Liberal he was a senior member in both Chretien's and Martin's governments. He never took sides, he disagreed with the infighting that the Martin and the Chretien camps split the party, and just be glad that the party didnt break away into two or we would be screwed when it comes to elections time.

There were only a few people that were allowed to attend the event for three those who have dedicated their time for the campaign and those who have volunteered to assist in setting up and the duration of the event.
