It hasn't been announced yet. But the federal Conservative nomination meeting for Fleetwood-Port Kells has been set for September 10. Former Squamish councillor Paul Lalli, whose nomination papers have been been submitted to the party, will be likely be running against incumbent Nina Grewal. It's expected there will be around 5,000 voters at that meeting - accompanied by the usual hissing, pissing and membership challenges.
I think the Conservatives won't be able to take Fleetwood-Port Kells in the next election. The results from the last proves it. If they do elect, it'll be within 200-300 votes. Fleetwood is waking up.
The inside scoop on this boy is that he would make a good MP. But for some reason the bible thumper alliance that still runs the show want her. This one will end up in court fer sure. keep shitting in the bed Colin.
I wonder what the breakdown of the membership sign up is. Grewals claim to have over 3,000. Not only is the bible thumper's backing Nina so are the Indo-Canadian old school. Old school with the power of the dollar and ability to organize. Maybe Lali will run for council.
This is going to be a real mess of a riding in the next election.
Stay tuned for the fun and excitment.
Someone show Colin the bathroom. Puuleze.
There is no way Lalli can lose this. Grewal is tainted fish. If the old school indos are that dumb to support her then Lalli will be able to make up the difference in whiteys. He's got all the ones that count.
Well, if I were a Fed Lib or Fed NDP'er, I'd be cheering for Nina. If Nina wins, the seat is in play. If Lalli wins the CPC might be able to turn the corner in this riding. It's hilarious that there is even a debate within the CPC about keeping the Grewal name in play. There will be no more than 2,000 people voting and it's too close to call.
The inside scoop on this ...

The inside scoop is that I knew MasterDebator, ... MasterDebators was a friend of mine. Poster, ... you're no MasterDebator!
It is dissapointing to see Sikh Canadians in BC supporting a party that is actively seeking candidates who are prejudiced against Sikhs.
Elizabeth Thompson, Montreal Gazette
OTTAWA - A popular Quebec radio host and psychiatrist who has suggested blacks on average have a lower IQ than whites, said he was wooed by the Conservatives to run for the party in the next election.
However, Pierre ''Doc'' Mailloux said he rejected the overtures from former Conservative cabinet minister and recruiter Pierre H. Vincent because he didn't want to have to wear a tie to sit in Parliament.
''I can't accept that they oblige me to wear a tie while a Sikh has the freedom to wear his (turban) on his head in the federal Parliament,'' Mailloux said.
Hey, Anth. That 200-300 last time was due to press stories and liberal lies about Gurmant. Have any charges been laid? Things will return to normal in Fleetwood.
Hey Hammer. Vincent is not a former Conservative Minister, he was a former Progressive Conservative Minister and that old intolerant Party does not exist. If we can purge a the last few "unreformed" dinosaurs like Vincent, they won't keep trying to recruit people that they should know would never be accepted by our National Council.
It is very unbelievable that there would be an apetite for the Grewals. I think the Alliance people referred to above are nuts. Nina is a no-no. My feeling is that she does nothing for the community. This guy Lalli seems like a really good person. He's had some good comments in the press and most importantly he's clean. But are the soCons listening? Of course not. Maybe Gurmant has video of the Prime Minister having an extra piece of pie...
I am Indo and proud to be a member of the conservative party. All the liberals did was manipulate our people into thinking that there would be benefits to the community. The only benefits were to liberal friends and insiders. We got screwed. Every time there was a problem with any ballots they blames us. Guys like Gurmant are a disgrace if you ask me. Look at the track record.
It's time for a change and fresh approach. Paul Lalli was at a couple of events I attended and he is really somebody the whole Surrey community can embrace. White or brown should not matters brothers. We are in Canada, not in India. If you want people that will make you feel that way go home. We came here for a better life. Paul Lalli represents the successful and decent Indo. He comes from a working family like us. He will win and the party hacks who look like they work against him are very wrong.
I am Chinese and I am proud to be a member of the conservative party. (shame on Raymond Chan though).
Ujjal Dosanj is what gives the Indo-Canadians a bad name. First driving our economy into the ground as an NDP, and then becoming the yes-man to a scandelous ex-PM.
However, I will have to say the Grewals have what it takes to take out any challenger. Even Mary Polak proves to be no compeition against them. May this riding will be closer than our landslide victory over in Surrey North, I suspect that Gurmant will once again display how deep his network is.
The only riding in Fraser Valley I see changing color is probably in Gurmant's old riding. It should be a win for the tories.
"I am Chinese and I am proud to be a member of the conservative party. (shame on Raymond Chan though)."
Yeah so? I'm Anglo-Scottish and proud to be
a member of the Conservative party.
"However, I will have to say the Grewals have what it takes to take out any challenger. Even Mary Polak proves to be no compeition against them. "
Mary ain't running for the nomination.
"May this riding will be closer than our landslide victory over in Surrey North, I suspect that Gurmant will once again display how deep his network is. "
About as deep as the left over coffee in the coffee cup these days.
Gurmant wants power and influence, so does Nina.
As I said earlier, the indos are trying to control politics in Surrey. Dhaliwal and Grewal have a lot influence.
People might not like her but I think most people think she has done a good job.
Nina's down fall is going to be person named "Gurmant"!
The seat could go NDP or Liberal next time if this process gets ugly.
Harper had to protect the sitting MP. What was Metcalfe and reynolds thinking?
"As I said earlier, the indos are trying to control politics in Surrey. Dhaliwal and Grewal have a lot influence."
Nothing new there. The Catholics were trying to control politics in the BC Social Credit Party when VanderZalm was Premier.
People shouldn't buy into that Dhaliwal and Grewal have influnce junk.
"People might not like her but I think most people think she has done a good job. "
Of doing what?
"Nina's down fall is going to be person named "Gurmant"!"
No kidding.
"The seat could go NDP or Liberal next time if this process gets ugly."
If it comes to that, I'd rather the NDP take it
than the federal Liberals.
"Harper had to protect the sitting MP. What was Metcalfe and reynolds thinking?"
No he doesn't. In fact the best thing to do is
say to the sitting MP:
"You're on your own. This is your test. If you
can make it through the Nomination, we'll give
you help."
If Nina thinks she's that good, let the membership decide if she is.
That's democracy, but the big problem is too many groups want influence and power and the result is lacklustre candidates who end up being someone else's accounts receivable.
The great thing about Paul Lalli is that he is an authentic conservative -- he has been involved in the party (and its various incarnations) since at least 1993. He has been a volunteer on numerous campaigns, and he is an honest supporter of free enterprise principles and values. Paul is a conservative who happens to be indo-canadian, not an indo-canadian who wants to get elected at any cost.
BLT...he did run for council and lost!
Didn't you say that last time, Sam?
The point here being, that Paul Lalli would make a very good choice and Nina Grewal would most certainly not. The Indo-Canadians I know, and I know lots of them, would be attracted to a youthful, energetic, honest fellow than...well, Nina.
Lalli has been working his members and speaking to various groups in and outside his community. Nina, has been complaining about manufactured dirty tricks campaigns and phantom phone banks, etc. Add to that, that the party brass has treated Lalli like he was sailing towards the nomination on the Komgata Maru, and you get my drift.
It's pathetic to see how the rethermalized Reform brass who are running the show have convinced long time Tories (some) that it's their way or the highway. That the rules which protect Nina Grewal and all other incumbents are so over the top and that it doesn't matter who complains. Here's a big shout out to the boys in downtown Vancouver and in Ottawa: has it occurred to any of you geniuses that you have a minority, and that maybe, just maybe, you need better candidates to get a majority?
I am puzzled over the willingness of the CPC to put with, support and recruit candidates who they have to constantly manage and be worried about ending up on the front page of the newspaper. Why not just recruit quality candidates? Why not simply discipline those who embarrass and bring the party into disrepute?
Why do we wonder why pariticipation rates are in such decline - the issue is not electoral reform the issue rests with political parties run by third-rate partisan organizers more concerned about deal-making than attracting top-drawer candidates.
I'm Anglo-French-Aboriginal... 9th generation European British North America (UEL in great numbers) and French North American (Quebecois in great numbers) .. not sure how to count Aboriginal so go with 400th generation... my ancestors founded this country and created it to share and be open.
I left the conservative party because of comments against the French and Aborignals and for that matter, comments againt Atlantic Canadians (that's you Steve Harper), and people of the North, and Ontarioites and just about any group of the day that gets them upset because they want a voice and a place in the land.
My ancestors build this country not for the insular that talk to themselves in their own echo chamber against other Canadians' this land is for you an me - all of us - and it is big enough for us all.
Hey Singh:
So you're saying that the Conservatives are any better at manipulation of the South Asian community than was any other party (beginning with the NDP way back when)? The BC Libs are chock a block full of Conservatives, (and Libs, and socreds...) and they haven't done squat for our community! What's Harper done for the community that you can claim is an example of his "opening doors" policy?
The Conservatives will do what every other party has done in the past: ignore the work that South Asian organizers do for them, while begging for their votes.
The only thing happening in Fleetwood is (once again) the non-pigmented leadership group within a political party (in this case conservative) pitting South Asian against South Asian, in what was once thought of as a "safe" seat.
Conservative-Liberal-NDP...different pile, same load of crap.
Lets get the Basi boyz over there on a recruiting drive and we can get 10,000 members (er votes) at the meeting. Would be really interesting then!
Better dead than Red, the only good Red-Tory is a dead one!!!!
Neo-con writes, "Better dead than Red, the only good Red-Tory is a dead one!!!!"
The extremists are at home in Steve Harper's party.
Eugene
You sound so much like another person who proved he was an abysmal excuse for a politician - Joe Clark or Joe McTeer. Since it seems you are not a member of the Conservative Party - you would feel most comfortable with the sore loser crowd with the Joe Clarks and david Orchards of this world. Because if you were a moderate conservative you would not have been a member of the Canadian Alliance and even tried to be candidate for them in 2000. The extremists in Conservative Party where are they? Comments against certain groups - well they have been made by other parties as well.
Successive Liberal government brought acts to ban Chinese immigration and interned the Japanese during WWII. So who has been truly an extremist natural governing party here, not the Conservatives, sounds like the Liberals which you part of. My advice join the Liberals - party that supports terrorists like Hezbollah, Hamas and Al Qaeda
Thank you neo-con. As a Chinese, I will never vote for the the liberals as long as I am alive. Just because PM/JC recruited some Asian MP translators do not make them racially sensitive. Thank God for the conservatives and God Bless Canada.
Neo-Con writes,"... the Liberals - party that supports terrorists like Hezbollah, Hamas and Al Qaeda"
That is a lie no matter how you slice it.
"Just because PM/JC recruited some Asian MP translators do not make them racially sensitive."
So FHK, I was wondering if you could translate for us what KHF said earlier when his response to your comments "I am Chinese and proud to be a Conserative and his response was "Yeah so? I'm Anglo-Scottish and proud to be a member of the Conservative party.
Maybe you should join the NDP with Jenny Kwan and Gabriel Yiu because the Tories and the Grits either don't like you or you don't like them.
Paul Lalli deserves to win this but Harper doesn't deserve him. If the PM is so dumb that he has to use some protective circle to try to guarantee good candidates stay and that includes bad ones too then he an idiot. Lalli is a really impressive guy when you talk to him and look at his record, but why would the people behind the scenes want someone like Nina? They are crazy.
Win this Paul. Good luck to all your backers because the reform alliance people have to be kicked the hell out of the party. You will bring the word decent back to Fleetwood Port Kells.
Wow, that is quite a lot of support for us conservatives in Surrey. That is excellent, that means liberals are in big troubles in Port Kells. I mean, which liberals would be stupid enough to pose as a conservative here and try to defend Paul Lalli.
Nina Grewal will get "Lallied" on Sept. 10th. So complete will be Lalli's win, that she will not be left with even a glimmer of hope for a legal challenge. This is the last of the Grewals.
How do I know? Lalli's met with all the Indo leaders and they find what we find: one fine public servant who actually cares.
