It seems one of Okanagan-Shuswap MP Colin Mayes's faithful supporters isn't aware constituency offices are supposed to be non-partisan. In an email sent to "Christian men and women" - and subsequently posted on Factivism - Vernon resident Heather Lyseng writes that there's "such a short time to help Colin win the nomination. Here is how you can do this. If you DO NOT have a Conservative Membership, please go to Colin's office at #206-3203-30 Str. (this is a couple doors down from the Access Centre, across from the library). This membership has to be purchased by this Sat. Aug. 12th; cost $10.00 (You have to be a member in order to vote)." The email then encourages churchgoers to back Mr. Mayes because "He is a Godly man." Thankfully for Mr. Mayes, though, his constituency office workers are better educated about the do's and don'ts of Canadian politics.
When we phoned Mr. Mayes's office and asked where we could pick up a Conservative membership form, the worker responded, "First of all, just to clarify for you, we've had several phone calls about this. But I just wanted to let you know that this is not the Conservative Party office. It's a non-partisan office - just to clarify in your mind. But what I can do is direct you to either Colin's wife Jacquie Mayes or Ria Carpay. There's also a Website that you can go online (to sign-up) - and it's www.conservative.ca. And all you need to do is click on membership....But I also know if you do want to become a member in order to become part of the vote, you do need to be signed-up before Saturday."
Oooo. They got Caught! Red Handed!
But, they are Tories and can do no wrong. So, I am sure everyone will give them a free pass again.
they got caught? Come on, unless you really like to build the conspiracies, the supporter is just undertaking their own promotional campaign. Sounds like the office dealt with it effectively.
yeah, after they were caught.
Following the link, I thought this quote from the email was most interesting:
"We believe that God is alive and well on Parliament Hill and we, the people, need to become involved so that our voice can be heard loud and clear in Ottawa. Please support Colin by becoming a member of the Conservative Party of Canada"
no one mentined Sukh Dhaliwal's office being used for a Liberal Leadership event as previously reported here on PEO recently.
If we are strong enough to take down incumbent Val Meredith (yes, not only have we done a Ned-Lamont before, we also did a Homer-Simpsons on no-communion-for-you Martin, I say we are unstoppable..ha), what's stopping us from taking down another weak/invisible MP. If Ronald Reagan, the greatest President of United States according to polls, can emerge as a God-fearing governor in the most liberal state in America, I urge that our politicians do the same and profess your faith openly as is said in the Bible. Either way, I sense a conservative revolution coming and I say hop on the train when there is still time.
What ever happended to the seperation of church and state? Guess it doens't apply the farther to the right you get.
Well FHK, I say hop in front of the train while there is still time.
Well FHK, an interesting sense you have there, but I think it's really not a sense as much as a pain.
I'd urge a good laxitive to get all that silly stuff out of you at once rather than plopping smelly little mounds here, there and everywhere.
BTW, I've never been a god-fearing person, but I must admit that when people try to mix religion with politics things can get real fearful.
Is there not one agnostic or free-thinker in the entire Conservative Party of Canada?
Religious people are in almost all political parties. What are unique, within Canada, about the CPC is the concentration, type of religious orientation, and the contradictions the party tries to masquerade as coherent philosophy.
Steve Harper is an atheist but his party is 2/3rd American-Christian-Right - a contradiction for sure. But they share an authoritarian view of leadership.
The rest of the party is 1/3 to 1/2 Libertarians who are predominantly a mix of religious values tending to anti-establishment religion - if any.
The American-Christian-Right in the CPC has elements of government authoritarianism in it, which makes for most of the internal wars with the Libertarians in the Canadian far right i.e. Anti-establishment Libertarians versus Authoritarians and their contradictory values t have so obviously spilled into public view since Diefenbaker.
Nevertheless, the religious right is nearly 2/3rds in charge of the CPC but does not win all battles. For the sack of power (authority to rule), they get their act together about once in every four elections.
[After thought: I lean populist, which is dead within the CPC and not in neither the libertarian nor authoritarian wings of the party - just another reason I find Steve distasteful. He is as far from populist as *ANY* Prime Minister this country has ever seen. I am also Anglican but don't have the stomach for forcing people to live another's life. Steve's lack of spiritual values but willingness to use other's religion to force power over people I find very distasteful]
While we are on the subject, why did Stephen Harper call his kids "Ben" and "Rachel"?
"no one mentined Sukh Dhaliwal's office being used for a Liberal Leadership event as previously reported here on PEO recently"
there is a lot of things you don't know about sukh's office....
I was actually the person that received all those "godly" emails from Mr. Mayes troops and then sent them on to the media.
For some inexplicable reason I was put on Colin Mayes Christian Soldiers Spam list (Could it be that my Shawmail account has the word "bliss" in it.)
I asked them to stop spamming me twice. Then I told them that I didn't much care for Mr Mayes politics. Here's the last email I sent them before I finally gave up and went to the media with the whole debacle -
I'm not sure why I received your email in the first place, perhaps it was an accident, perhaps a massive spam campaign for Colin... regardless, I do have a couple general thoughts regarding Colin Mayes as well as the Conservative Party in general. I hope you don't mind me responding in kind to your intrusion upon my in-box.
I must say that I'm a little shocked at you description of Colin Mayes as a "godly man", seems a bit short and frumpy for that sort of adjective. Perhaps you are referring to his stand against abortion and gay marriage, if that entitles him to "godliness" status then we must be thinking of a different god. That must be where the confusion lies. The god I was thinking of gave that little chat from the mount... you remember the one, "Blessed are the meek", "Blessed are the merciful", "Blessed are the peacemakers", etc. etc... all coincidently at odds with most if not all Conservative party policy.
Think long and hard before you throw your support behind any politician. Think about the things that are most important to you as a human being, to your children, and to your family.
Peace,
Daniel
But the spam just kept coming. So I figured, if they really wanted the exposure that badly....
Oh and by the way, as a heads up, the link to the Factivism article has been moved slightly, to make room for another interesting project. The Emails can now be found here
Factivism.com is now running a community driven news portal for progressive and alternative news and views. Users provide the news, and then act as their own gatekeepers. Democratic alternative news.
Who was it that said "Democracy is the worst of all possible forms of gate keeping - except for all the others"?
