Gone yesterday, here today

Earlier, we broke the news former provincial cabinet minister Gulzar Cheema wouldn't be renewing his federal Liberal membership. But, in an interview today, Dr. Cheema said he's no longer thinking about running for the Conservatives in Newton-North Delta. "I think this is the best thing for me to do - not to be seen as just an opportunist and be painted as someone people can't trust. Even though I don't like what the (Liberals) doing and I like the present government and what they're doing...So I just want to sit out (the next election) and examine all options."

The former Manitoba MLA said he reached that decision after speaking with Vancouver South-Burnaby MP Herb Dhaliwal, Senators Sharon Carstairs and Mobina Jaffer, as well as Gerard Kennedy - whom he continues to support in the Liberal leadership race. And "they all all told me that if you have the problem, stick with the party, talk to us."

But Dr. Cheema says he still intends to let his membership with the Liberals expire. "And when the new leader comes - whoever is the leader - we'll sit down and see whether there's any common ground for me to rejoin the party and whether they'll make some substantial changes in the party structure."

And he's also wants to make sure the new leader will change the way future Liberal governments hand out order in council appointments. Because, in the past, Dr. Cheema says those appointments haven't been "equally distributed among all the different ethnic communities. And that's not fair."

In a time of David Emerson types, good on him for trying to maintain his credibility.

Does this mean Shinder Purewal is going to be running against Sukh in Newton-North Delta. This could start a feud between the Dhaliwal and Purewal clans.

So Cheema was thinking of leaving Kennedy's leadership campaign to join Harper's Conseravtives? I wonder how Kennedy's camp ( Bruce Young and etc..) feel about this?

How hard was really working on the campaign?

I think Cheema's political career is done!

Why would Kennedy want him working on his campaign?

I am quite disappointed to hear that Gulzar had the notion to run for nomination for the Conservative's Candidacy in Newton -- North Delta Riding. Sort of hurtful to those who have word along side with Gulzar on Brenda Locke's federal campaign against incumbent Nina Grewal.

Does this nonsense have to continue?

Purewal is a federal Liberal.

It doesn't Cheema's working on the campaign. But good on Gerard for trying to keep people within the Liberal Party.

As Sean revealed our nomination rules do not allow Liberals who are more concerned with power than the policy of the Conservative Party to run. Once Cheema found this out, he retreated and is now trying to get back to the Liberals.

There will be few more opportunists who will be turned away by the rules or the common sense of membership. It's too bad they didn't put the same membership requirement on the voting membership so only the committed members would be voting in the nomination and put an end to all these silly "instant/Liberal" members invading our Party to rig nominations.

Actually, we should all be happy that Cheema did the right thing. It shows great character...and the integrity he upholds, while some crooked politicians will continue to get ahead in the game.

The Cheema implosion continues...

You would think that a practicing Doctor wouldn't need the kind of gratification and ego stroking that seems to be a prerequisite for running for office? I've never understood why Dr. Cheema NEEDS politics in the first place.

As a South Asian myself, the horror of continuing to watch the so called "leaders" cast the whole community in a bad light is simply getting too painful.

Note to future South Asian "somebodies": DO SOMETHING GOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE, which HELPS bring people together. Use your skill and brains to make the community better...OPEN doors, instead of keeping them closed, stop caring if you get an appointment that makes you look important to relatives in your village in India as a reason for doing anything, and EARN the trust of people. In short, don't be like it has been in the past.

Let's get beyond this...and be better!

George, I hope you don't think I am picking on everything you say just because I differed with you over Israel's military actions in Lebanaon. But this sentence really begs a question. How did these party purity considerations apply in the case of David Emerson? Did John Reynolds sit him down at a desk with a stack of freshly sharpened HB pencils and administer some kind of policy knowledge quiz?

Posted by Budd Campbell on August 1, 2006 09:06 AM

No I don't think you're picking on me.

I live in Vancouver Kingsway, I don't agree with that floor crossing and I think that after that experience if Harper had a do over he wouldn't accept him into caucus.

I don't agree with the anti-floor crossing bill either.

I can certainly understand why people like Mr. Cheema wanting to jump out of the sinking boat. But he wasnt the only one, Doug McCullum was pretty much barred for life from tory nomination races. I suppose once he is a liberal, he will always be a liberal, and that is unfortunate.

But it was never about party loyalty anyways, it is all about power. Everyone wants to be part of the government, who whoever does not never understood the point of politics in the first place. Therefore I would suggest that Kennedy/Iggy/Rae supporters start switching parties when they have a chance to do so before. Otherwise, you will end up like Gulzar Cheema, whose political career is prett much doomed.

Something is not right here. Dr Cheema is to smart to do something dumb like this. This is out of character for him. There has to be something more that is not being released.

If Cheema's political career is doomed, I have an ass pocket full of politicos who would trade their careers for his.

Wow! Where does this deep well of support come from for Cheema? He's been a minor leaguer who made a dumb move in resigning provincially to take a federal run.
