Political Insite

Within the next few hours, federal Liberal leadership candidate Gerard Kennedy will be getting on board the harm reduction band wagon. His campaign will be issuing a news release calling on the federal government to continue funding Vancouver's safe injection site. During the last election, then Opposition leader Stephen Harper said he was against providing government support for the use of illegal drugs.

It's interesting that Kennedy's BC handlers have him jumping on this bandwagon. When he was in Victoria, he was against Sheila Orr's harm reduction suggestions for sex trade workers but now he supports them for drug addicts?

I was at that victoria meeting. Just to make it clear, Kennedy indicated that he was against legalizing prostitution, not against harm reduction strategies.

Good on Kennedy for supporting this important initiative.

just to make it clear ... prostitution is illegal?

It's pretty surprising and impressive that he went out on a limb like this. I guess with his momentum really picking up he feels he can starting moving his passionate bold stands into the mainstream. This shows a strong attunement to BC issues from Kennedy, I'm genuinely impressed and agree with him strongly. Other candidates should express their support InSite site as well, if they actually do support it.

Big news. (yawn)

Don't all Liberals support the safe injection site? Larry Campell campaigned on it during the federal election as the new Senator. It was in the Made in BC Agenda. It isn't news.

But it's good to see that Kennedy is supporting the party,

well certain candidates in this race aren't exactly the most wholehearted or longtime supporters of many Liberal values.

If a candidate supports something as important to Vancouver as InSite, they should definitely be standing up for it when it's threatened as it is now. The silent treatment doesn't usually work when it comes to advancing important public policy

What exactly DOES Kennedy stand for that isn't defined in vague, motherhood, macro statements that aren't regurgitated by everyone who ever existed in the Political middle or left of the spectrum?

I'm in full agreement with "Keen observer".

Also, I like Kennedy's hair...and sharp clothing. Other than that...he's like a pretty flower in a windstorm: waving to and fro frantically, bending but never breaking, swinging from side to side depending on the direction of the wind, but looking good...always looking good.

This rose has no scent.

Prediction: Finishes 3rd or 4th.

Wow! This is huge news. Perhaps next a press release from the Kennedy camp expressing his support for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

This is the kind of radical thinking we need in this party dammit!

I agree with the last few comments that Kennedy is just re-iterating party policy. Now, for some other candidates that will remained unnamed, (but start with an I and R), should come out and say they are for party policy because it is questionable that they support certain aspects.
