Earlier, we told you Wendy Yuan is the only candidate who's currently running in the Vancouver-Kingsway federal Liberal nomination race, scheduled to be held on July 29. Former United Chinese Community Enrichment Services Society chairman Mason Loh and Royal Pacific Real Estate Corp. president and chief executive officer David Choi have been suggested as possible competitors. Those familiar with the nomination race say it's unlikely Mr. Choi will run. Mr. Loh, on the other hand, has filled out his nomination papers. But he's still contemplating whether to file them. The deadline for new entrants into the nomination race is tomorrow. Meanwhile, in related news, the Vancouver-Kingsway constituency association is said to have an estimated 1,200 members.
David Choi just became the president of Wally Oppal's riding association, so it is highly unlikely he will be running in Kingsway.
It is rumored that Loh may not run at all, because he will be appointed as the candidate in Kingsway if his leadership horse, Rae I believe, wins. So why should he run now if he will be appointed?
To wage a war on David Emerson is to wage a war on the Chinese Canadian business community, and win or lose, Wendy better be running all the way to Ottawa and stay far far away from Vancovuer. Martha Hall Findlay ran against a candidate who has virtually no ties in her riding and got off easy once she lost. But if Wendy gets nominated unopposed, she will have to face some serious consequences by running against David Emerson.
Are you suggesting that the Chinese community would vote for a Conservative white candidate against a Liberal Chinese candidate? How many "members of the business community" Chinese or white live in Vancouver Kingsway? I would argue that it would be no more than 1%. They live in Quadra or places like that.
It is Emerson who must run away from Kingsway as fast as he can.
They have done that in the past against Raymond Chan, and they wont mind doing it again with Wendy Yuan who is becoming more of a laughing stock in the Chinese community with her ever so apparent desire for power. Kanman Wong was the only Chinese candidate in the riding last election and lost by a landslide. One cannot start to imagine the influence that Emerson has in the business community. So two things are for sure, one, Emerson will win, and two, Yuan will not be taken seriously in the political field, and her business will soon suffer. Just go around and look at those losers from the Liberal Party, you may get an idea or two.
Are you saying the Liberals are not allowed to run a candidate because of her race?
Liberals won that riding many times before Emerson ever waltzed in.
Nothing against her race. She's just a goner.
Actually I would love to see more Chinese MP's in Ottawa who actually READ the bills before they are voting. Race never mattered anyways.
But my point is....Wendy is a goner.
Well, Vancouver-Kingsway last elected a Conservative in 1962. Kanman Wong was a non-factor in the last election because he was Conservative - it would appear his Chinese background wasn't enough to convince voters.
To Fan-Hsin Kung: I saw a lot of NDP and Liberal signs in Van-Kingsway's small business windows and on lawns during the election. I certainly don't have any special in with the Chinese business community, but I live in the riding. I would say Emerson outraged more people than he attracted with his own "ever-so apparent desire for power".
If Yuan is as unpopular as you say, then it may be a real three-way election rather than the NDP-Lib battle we saw last time. That would probably benefit the NDP, assuming they field a strong candidate. Those who voted for Liberal Emerson (Emerson 1.0) are going to split between Emerson and Liberal, or possibly jump to the NDP if they are unhappy with the defector Emerson 2.0, unhappy with Yuan, and have a positive impression of the NDP candidate.
Waddell's unlikely to run again, so who knows?
Mr. Kung:
You are delirious if you think that David Emerson is going to win again in his riding. Frankly, I'll be surprised if he runs AGAIN, never mind WINNING as a Tory!
Mr. Emerson WAS tops in the business community, until he rammed a completely, industry-destroying, softwood-lumber "Agreement" down the throats of the Forestry industry. In the same process, he has completely destroyed NAFTA (since now the Americans know that if NAFTA isn't working for them, they can unfairly put up trade barriers until we eventually give in).
David Emerson is the one who is rapidly becoming a joke in the business community: first for his complete idiocy in being unable to understand what it means to run for office in a democracy (and by his own words, an inability to understand the need to represent the voters who elected him, and not switch over a mere 24 hours after getting elected, to a party which fielded a candidate that was so far in last place that he looked as if he hadn't even left the starting line), (HOW can a supposed "genius" in business be so STUPID about the basic premise of a democratic electoral system?!? Either he isn't the genius everyone thinks he is, or he's less than upfront...either way, it's bad for him); and second for his complete mishandling of a vital economic cornerstone of our Province/Country (Forestry), and our need to protect our Province's/Nation's sovereignty in making decisions which effect the same industry (indeed ALL of our industries from coast, to coast, to coast).
Mr. Fan...you can believe your own assertions, but as the saying goes "reality...bites".
Next election...Emerson gone and either Liberal or NDP in his place.
