Earlier, Public Eye broke the news that Wendy Yuan (who dat?) would be running for the federal Liberal nomination in Vancouver-Kingsway. So far, Ms. Yuan - whose nomination campaign is being chaired by national vice-president Mike Hillman - is the only declared candidate in the race. And she may end up being the only one. Today, the Grits announced the nomination date for that riding has been set for July 29, with the meeting scheduled to take place at the Vancouver Alpen Club. Sharon Apsey, the Liberal election readiness chair in British Columbia, made the decision to call the meeting in conjunction with the party's green light committee. That decision was approved by national election readiness co-chairs Mike Eizenga and Lucien Robillard. New entrants have until July 21 to get throw their hats in the ring.
Finally!
I thought the Tories were gunna nominate their entire slate before we had even one candidate in place.
what a shame that the parties National Vice President is working for a candidate.
The libs are showing once again that they really don't understand democratic reform
What is wrong with a the party's VP working for a candidate? Isn't everyone allowed to have an opinion in a democracy?
On another note, I am very surprised that this meeting was called.
Raymond Chan was very opposed to calling this meeting and insisted no nomination in Kingsway would take place until there is a new leader is chosen in December.
Maybe he thought he could appoint a Kennedy supporter into the riding?
Danny, it's not about whether they understand it or not, it's about the fact that they hold democracy in contempt.
With these tactics, Look for the FedLibs to be in the oppositions for a long time. If this keeps up, I'll be staying home come next election. What a farce.
Wow, Yeah, finally we have someone who will defeat David Emerson in next election.
Vote Liberal to stop the Tories!
No, really, we mean it this time....

Huh? You mean the "tactics" to get ready for an election, and getting your candidates in place early to have a strong organization?
You mean the "tactics" of following the request of the local riding association to get going right away so Liberals can fight the NDP and the Tories?
No wonder the Liberals are kicking off their election readiness efforts early. They can't give anything away to the NDP or the Tories.
The Conservatives had the support of 36 per cent of respondents in a late May/early June Mustel survey of 752 British Columbians, the same they got in the election. (this is the biggest poll of BCers since the election in January)
The Liberals got 32% per cent in the poll, up 4 points from election day.
The NDP got 25%, 4 points down from election day.
As Evi Mustel said at the time: "Harper has not made any inroads in B.C. specifically in the urban centres, where he was weakest in the election.
"All the reasons the urban centres did not vote for the Conservatives still stand in the way of gaining support [too right wing, general distrust, position on social policies such as child care] and now added to the list [the] Afghanistan mission and position on Kyoto," Mustel said in an e-mail message.
Kingsway is where David Emerson, if he chooses to run, will be slaughtered by Wendy Yuan, a Chinese woman who has been working very hard in the community. The last Chines woman who ran there, Sophia Leung, fared much better than Emerson.
The NDP will try, but they won't succeed.
A fair comment, obscurantist. Or is it Yossarian? Or maybe it's audra's sleepover friend, or maybe undrwatrmoonlyt?
Tell me this obscurantist. Should the federal NDP in Kingsway oppose Gateway, including the twinning of Port Mann and widening of Hwy 1, even though Glen Clark, the former provincial NDP MLA for the area, and Mike Harcourt are in favour of those projects.
I think "Longtime Kingsway observer" reads the situation correctly.
Yes.
What about Mason Loh and Patrick Wong?
I thought they were running.
Hasn't Mason been recruiting heavily for Bob Rae's leadership campaign, and Wong for Raymond Chan and Kennedy's campaign?
Why are they not mentioned as potential candidates?
When Steve Harper wanted a candidate in the last two elections, he would just send Reynolds to give the person an endorsement. Or as in the case of an Ottawa and Calgary riding, the CPC would offer to pay say $150,000 for the winning candidate to step down in favour of Steve Harper's pick. (Need I give links to this now public story?) So, I'm not sure why McVie is waving his finger at other parties for having a VP endorse someone... gosh, there isn't even any money involved; whereas, the CPC is on record for buying out nominees and having the leader endorse through their national campaign manager... all now on the public record.
"Kingsway is where David Emerson, if he chooses to run, will be slaughtered by Wendy Yuan, a Chinese woman who has been working very hard in the community. The last Chines woman who ran there, Sophia Leung, fared much better than Emerson."
What if Emerson wants to run elsewhere?
Sophia Leung was an appointed candidate. But so
was Emerson.
Hopefully Ian Waddell will take the riding. Think the people have had enough of the self-important federal Liberals there.

Yeah interesting story there Eugene. Ranks right up there with Paul Martin completely bypassing the local riding association and directly appointing the candidate, such as Billy Boy Cunningham, who has now lost two elections in
a row. Why would Billy Boy be ranked up there as a "star candidate" amongst those like Dosanjh
(a former Premier) and Emmerson (CEO of a large
forest company)? Billy Boy was just a financial manager at a local bank.
Then there's the appointment of Sophia Leung who
said at one time she was a prominent player in
the Chinese community and deserved to be appointed.
Hopefully the new leader and the guys across the street at the Conservative Company will put an end to this appointment junk.
The Liberals could do well to get rid of the provisions in the constitution that allow for the direct appointment of candidates by the leader.
This isn't a sure thing for Wendy. Mason is a big name in the community. He signed up a lot of people for Rae. He is a big-time lawyer.
An immigration consultant is running for a Liberal nomination?
If ever there was a party in need of renewal: this is it!
I find the need for this nomination to take place on a Saturday in July to be very suspect, where?s the fire? Is the election in 12 days? Simply put the party in BC has once again shown its great ability to alienate, disenfranchise and generally piss of its members. By not allowing any sign up period (what type of party has a nomination with no new member sign up period....that?s just wacky) and picking a date when many are on vacation
I would suggest that the party has called the nomination because a fair and open process would produce a result they wouldn't like.
Apparently despite all of the party's "sincere" rantings about reforming itself to be more open and inclusive their rants should be taken in the spirit of this Oscar Wilde quote:
A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal.
I for one can't stand anymore the crap that is pushed to justify unjustifiable actions.
Obscurantist, thanks for a very succint answer. Tell Yossarian that he can enjoy his sleepovers with audra all he wants!
BTW, obscurantist, you do realize that the author of "triple convergence", economist Anthony Downs, has nothing to do with anti-freeway zealots? And that respected researchers who work for the American Smart Growth movement had criticized the one-track mind approach of some environmentalists who believe that any positive level of induced demand is grounds for opposing a transport project.
Or would it be safe to say that this issue is of no interest to you, other than as a politically correct "branding statement"?
whenwillitend:
The Liberal Party of Canada has had retroactive cut-offs for recruitment of new members for their nomination meetings for at least a decade if not more. You make it sound like it is a sacred right to stack a meeting with instant members.
The Vancouver Kingsway riding association has been calling for a nomination meeting ever since Emerson crossed the floor. They want a candidate to work on the streets of the riding right now, so that they don't lose the opportunity to win the riding -- or let the NDP seem to be the only party with an outlet for the outrage in the riding.
They don't want any kind of appointment -- they want an open meeting. The party has responded positively to their wishes.
Anyone who has been paying attention would know that a nomination meeting was in the works.
Quit belly-aching.
Unless Mason Loh's communications skills are much better than they were in 2000, I don't think he can win that riding in a federal election. As for Patrick Wong, will Van-Kingsway trust another Gordon Campbell Liberal after the way Emerson turned out. Wendy is the best candidate the Liberals have to offer.
No.
Another succinct answer, obscurantist/Yossarian/undrwatrmoonlyt.
But it's not clear if the solitary "no" applies to the two questions in paragraph two (Downs and Cervero) or the rhetorical one in paragaph 3.
In any case, I have another question for you. Do you want to tell people here on this more public forum that you take it upon yourself to fink on, to rat out posters on more private forums, such as Rabble, who have previously been banned by the groupies for offending their delicate sensibilities? Do you think people on a more public forum such as this would pay more attention to your views if they new you believed in keeping things correct and shutting off the posting privileges of people you think have the wrong opinions?
Hi, Budd. Yes, I've stopped beating my wife.
To answer your question in a less obscure way, and in a less "politically incorrect" way (political incorrectness being what you claim to have been banned from Babble for), I think the people here are intelligent enough to parse through your loaded questions and decide for themselves, if they care enough to do so in the first place.
Budd, your off-topic ramblings are cluttering up what is otherwise an interesting string of comments. Nobody cares about your choice to fight an anonymous internet battle. Why not just exchange email addresses and do it that way?

whenwillitend:
you simply re-posted your last rant. What is your axe to grind? The Liberal Party is obviously getting its act together for the next election. The Liberal Party's interim National Election Readiness Committee says there are more nominations to come across the country. There will most likely be an election at the latest some time shortly after the new leader is chosen. Why not get ready for that election, with candidates working now? It would be a good idea to re-nominate all of the sitting MPs over this summer as well.
There is no sense in buying in to media spin that Harper will win that election, and the Liberals should therefore "down tools".
The "death" of the Liberal Party has been truly exaggerated! Even in the middle of this leadership campaign, it is showing that it can walk and chew gum at the same time.
What is your complaint?
