Yesterday, the Toronto Star's Linda Diebel paraphrased federal Liberal British Columbia party president Jamie Elmhirst as saying leadership candidate Gerard Kennedy "pulled in 4,000-plus new members by the deadline, compared with 1,500 each for his nearest competitors, (Bob) Rae and MP Stephane Dion." Continued Mr. Elmhirst, "Certainly the campaigns are going to say I'm wrong, but I think these tallies are fairly accurate." Needless to say, Mr. Elmhirst has ruffled more than a few feathers - especially among Rae supporters in Lotusland who maintain their candidate was, at the very least, in a close membership race with Mr. Kennedy as the campaigns reached the finish line. And now, Public Eye has learned, the party president is retracting some of his comments.
In an email sent to but not yet published by the Star, Mr. Elmhirst writes "The membership figures were presented without proper diligence and investigation on my part. This oversight on my behalf has resulted in a misrepresentation of the actual number of memberships delivered to the party by the Bob Rae campaign. After proper investigation it is now apparent that the Bob Rae campaign has delivered a number twice as high as earlier speculated - approximately 3000 memberships."
"I want to assure all members of the Liberal Party of Canada in B.C. that the party and its staff are intent upon administering a transparent and fair leadership process and that we will faithfully adhere to these principles," continued Mr. Elmhirst. "I apologize to the entire Bob Rae campaign team and in particular those in British Columbia who deserve our thanks for helping to contribute to the strengthening of the Liberal Party."
Earlier, Public Eye reported the leadership race has resulted in at least 10,000 membership forms being filled out in British Columbia (online and otherwise), with the Kennedy and Rae campaigns being the sign-up leaders. The following is a complete copy of that email, which was also sent to the Rae campaign.

Subject: RE: Toronto Star article
As you are aware I was the source for new Liberal Party membership recruitment figures for the party in British Columbia that were published in a story by Linda Diebel in today's issue of the Toronto Star. The membership figures were presented without proper diligence and investigation on my part. This oversight on my behalf has resulted in a misrepresentation of the actual number of memberships delivered to the party by the Bob Rae campaign. After proper investigation it is now apparent that the Bob Rae campaign has delivered a number twice as high as earlier speculated - approximately 3000 memberships.
I want to assure all members of the Liberal Party of Canada in B.C. that the party and its staff are intent upon administering a transparent and fair leadership process and that we will faithfully adhere to these principles.
I apologize to the entire Bob Rae campaign team and in particular those in British Columbia who deserve our thanks for helping to contribute to the strengthening of the Liberal Party.
Sincerely,
Jamie Elmhirst
President, Liberal Party of Canada in B.C.
Jamie Elmhirst has righted his wrong, however, he ought to be more careful when it comes to interpreting the leadership campaign.
Two things come to mind reading this post --
1. The Rae campaign is stronger than people have given it credit. Without a base in the party, he has pulled together a strong team in a short time.
2. Kennedy camp has inflated its numbers.
Huh? I can see how you got the first point from the post (and I agree) but how did you get the second?
how absurd !
The kennedy camp has clearly signed the most members in all of Canada!
The toronto Star conducted interviews with party officials in 8 provinces, they all confirmed Kennedy has signed the most members. So, this shows the Kennedy campaign has won the ground War!
Kennedy has a particulary strong Indo and Chinese group in BC and Ontario
The Kennedy people fooled Jamie Elmhirst. The office has't even finished counted everything yet. It looks like Kennedy didn't get more than 2000 in BC. Why Kennedy is inflating their numbers to 4000 is strange. People will eventually figure this out on voting day. Bob Rae definitely signed up the most people.
Correction, smeckshion. Its way too early to draw any conclusions other than the point people on Rae, Kennedy and to some extent Volpe came out in force. Dion is gaining from the buzz i hear, but the big disappointment must be ignatieff. His camp and so-called lead status has taken a big hit -- a coincidence that TDHeglomaniac joined his camp around the same time?
Sounds like noise... designed to win the undecided...
Once again Mr. Elmhirst makes a faux pas.
Some things never change....
The President of the LPCBC seems to be undergoing a string of bad luck. First he makes reference to Jack Laytons head as a "boiled dogs head". This caused quite a stir which resulted in an apology. Then he loses his business when information comes out that his partners despite their pleas to the contrary were shall we say "a little soiled" from the bcrail scandal. Now we have the mighty president yet again saying things he shouldn't and then backtracking to apologize.
