The woman who helped make Gordon Campbell than man he is today is backing Bob Rae in the federal Liberal leadership race. Mr. Rae campaign is set to announce that former Vancouver city councillor May Brown, who chaired the the provincial Liberal's 1996 election effort, will be putting her one-woman, powerhouse phone bank in action on behalf of the ex-Ontario premier. Ms. Brown, who has received both the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia, has been, in the past, described as both a "saint" and an "icon" by Grits. She'll be joined in supporting Mr. Rae by former provincial minister of state for resort development Patty Sahota.
May is a lovely lady and a well respected individual in the Liberal Party and it is not suprising that she is supporting Rae given her relationships with Greg Wilson and Mike/Pam McDonald who are leading his BC team. This endorsement would have actually meant something tangible in the 1970s or 80s -certainly much more than it does today. Despite being wonderful, May has no pull in the grass roots anymore.
Poor Stephen Owen, can't get anyone in his riding to follow him. This is yet another sad day for him.
Bob Rae has nothing to worry about now that Patty Sahota has come board. I wonder how many votes she's worth...
May is a very nice lady but she has no memberships, that is all that matters
Rae's team has no significant Indo or Chinese community support
These two communities are signing up heavily for Gerrard kennedy
May is a very nice lady and May WILL count for support. Sean had it right - she is a one-woman phone bank.
Patty is not to be underestimated either.
Nice pickups for Bob. Both are well-liked and both are effective organizers.
Patty is not known as an effective organizer in the Indo community.
I am very sorry to say kids that May Brown is a has-been and that's been the case for a very long time. Perhaps we were all too polite over the years to tell her that, but she really is and has no significant pull in any party anymore--and it's not just due to advanced age. May's way is antiquated. She has always overly relied on busy bodies, thus the McDonalds and in particular Gregor Wilson, none of whom bring any tangible strategy to campaigns. They are tacticians who need to have the strategy spoonfed to them or their respective campaign is doomed. And puuuuleeeeze let's lose the idea once and for all that she "made" Gordon Campbell. She most certainly helped, but her contribution wasn't that significant. Now if you were talking Art Phillips or JP Shason, that's a different story.
It's unsurprising that May wants to hang her probably last hat with Gregor Wilson and the McDonalds.
What a crew.
May is a nice lady. But she supported that interloper Christy Clark for the NPA nomination, and she is doing the same with that interloper Bob Rae for the federal Liberal leadership.
Patty Sahota is one of the lone Indo community members supporting Rae
All the top notch Indo organizers and all the temple leaders are supporting Gerrard Kennedy
May Brown is someone who knows how to orgainze and complete any task that she takes on. Unlike many in political circles, May actually does the work!
The real news here is just how far to the right ol' Bob lives these days. It's not surprising he is being linked to the same roots as Gordon Campbell. I suspect if you look into Rae's family roots you'll find a great many Campbells lurking about.
Good grief. The desperate spinning above. Really, show some tact. The great thing about May Brown is that she would never stoop to the level of some of those above when speaking about a fellow Liberal.
The issue raised above about Christy Clark is illustrative - she stuck her head out for Christy when many wouldn't.
And the hysteria about Kennedy's Indo's. The Indo Canadian community is not a herd. All camps have support from that community and, believe it or not, Indo Canadians are just as capable as anyone to making their mind up. Besides, I thought Kennedy was the "new generation" yet his tactics suggest old-style top-down organizing. The key to winning this convention is winning hearts and minds, not bully-boy organizing tactics. We've been down that road.
What's all this talk about Bob Rae?
Dont forget about little ol' me.
Relax Harry, I'm not going for the
Liberal nomination yet, but who knows?
Personally I find it perplexing why anyone would want to resurrect the political career of any former NDP has been. NDP leaders all die well earned political deaths for a reason; usually because what they are trying to run, they will only run into the ground instead.
"Personally I find it perplexing why anyone would want to resurrect the political career of any former NDP has been."
Well Kevin, maybe you should turn that question around. Why is it that the once all-powerful national Liberal Party is entertaining the candidacy of a former NDP Premier, who has just received the endorsement of another former NDP Premier? Could it be that the Liberals are desperate to defend their left flank? And could it be that those who have historically been involved with the Liberal Party itself are not cosnidered marketable to a wider audience?
