The personal and the political

David Suzuki is a big fan of federal Green leadership candidate Elizabeth May. An endorsement from the award-winning scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster is splashed on the front page of Ms. May's Website. And, on Sunday, Mr. Suzuki and his wife/foundation president Tara Cullis, will be hosting a private reception in support of May's leadership bid at their Point Grey home. But some are questioning the optics of that event - which is being organized by provincial Green leader Adriane Carr. After all, the David Suzuki Foundation is a charitable organization. And charitable organizations are prohibited from engaging in partisan political activity. But, in an interview with your humble organ, foundation executive director David Hocking explained "this is not a foundation initiative."

"We act in non-political ways. We're non-partisan and we have to remain non-partisan for obvious reasons. But we also all act as individuals. And we also all follow our responsibilities to vote and so on. So David and Tara are strictly acting as individuals. (The reception) has nothing to do with the foundation's support for one party or another." When asked whether this reception created a perceptual problem for the foundation, Mr. Hocking responded "It can do." But, again, he added "this has nothing to do with the foundation."

Believe it or not, I actually enjoy watching this Green Party Leadership race thus far. Unlike Liberal Party race, this is actually turning out to be interesting. Elizabeth, the tree-hugging grandmom, is launching a tough campaign from the birth place of th party, backed by the BC Green leader, a Senator and a hippie legend. It would appear that it's only right that she becomes the leader of Green Party.

But the current deputy leader David Chernushenko, is backed by Jim Harris who probably had hand picked his own people from Ontario into his circle. I expect this eco-capitalist Ontarian to put up a strong challenge against Elizabeth. If David can motivate enough of his people to vote, he just might take this and keep another BC'er out of power.

This should help to dispel any notion that David Suzuki and Jim Fulton are supporting the NDP.

Mr. Hocking other job is being a city councillor. DSF crew are quite a political bunch after work.

The DSF is, along with SPEC and the other members of the so-called Livable Region Coalition, adamantly opposed to the twinning of the Port Mann bridge and the widening, by one (1) lane, of the Trans Canada Hwy.

At the same time, the DSF is not at all opposoed to the Highway 99 or Sea-to-Sky project, including even the Eagleridge Bluffs component that will flatten some wetlands. Why the differential stance?
