Yesterday, Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan refused to get into specifics of why parks board member Allan De Genova had been suspended from the Non-Partisan Association's caucus, except to say it was an issue of "broken trust." And rumours are afoot that some had been pushing for that suspension ever since the commissioner told The Georgia Straight fellow association member Heather Holden should be more cautious in avoiding any perceived conflict of interest between her role as parks board chair and her job at the Vancouver Aquarium. But, in an earlier interview with Public Eye, the civic party's president Matt Taylor said he left last Tuesday's private get-together between himself, Mr. De Genova and Mayor Sullivan "feeling it had been a positive meeting - that the mayor had been very forthcoming to Al to try and address his concerns and to try to see how we could work better together. I thought it was a positive meeting." And that suggests the commissioner's decision to discuss what went on at that meeting was directly responsible for the suspension.
Sam's gotta come clean about the reason for suspending "DivaNova" otherwise it looks like he's got something to hide.We thought he was spinal cord injured not spineless!!!!!!
Mickey mouse is now doing media relations for the mayor's office. How much more can we take? Al D has been pissing in the tent for over two years. Is that so difficult to craft a message for?
So, because DeGenova discussed his meeting with Sam and Matt with the media and citizens of Vancouver he is suspended? Why wont Sam come out and say that is the reason?.....My guess is that no one at city hall believes the voters and citizens of Vancouver would believe that keeping them informed was "broken trust".
If Sam can't provide an explanation for it he never should have done it... seems to be a theme of his , eh?
Cheif Graham was not so hard on Sam after articles in the paper suggested and sullivan admitted to aiding and abetting criminals by letting them smoke crack in his Van... so why would Sam be so hard on DeGenova for exercising his democratic rights and informing the citizens?
No one is perfect, but it seems everyone has cut sam more slack than he has cut anyone else....
I wonder if we could be seeing the start of the same kind of problem that consumed Larry Campbell.
Leading a municipal slate is like herding cats, even more so than it is at the provincial or federal level. There's always going to be people on the slate who don't toe the party line, whether for reasons of principle or personal aggrandizement. Generally the best way to deal with this is with a light touch.
Campbell took personal offence at the dissent within COPE, and as a result tore the slate apart. The obvious difference here is that, so far, the dissent seems to be coming from one person on parks board, not from half of the city council. But if Sullivan acts like the same kind of control freak, we might see further cracks appearing in the NPA caucus. (Wishful thinking, maybe.)
Vancouver politics is the new BC politics.
Wacky.
