Federal International Trade Minister David Emerson is a lumberjack and apparently he's okay - at least in the eyes of British Columbia Wholesale Lumber Association. He's their 2006 Lumberman of the Year. And that means the association will get a chance to do something De-Elect David Emerson campaigners have been dreaming about since the former Liberal defected to the Conservatives - roast him. The gala event will be held in the Grand Ballroom of The Vancouver Club on June 8. Roasters will include Council of Forest Industries president and chief executive officer John Allan, Labour and Citizens' Services Minister Mike de Jong and Lignum Ltd. chair and chief executive officer Jake Kerr. The following is a complete copy of the roast program, which was obtained by Public Eye.

9:50 PM ADJOURN
It's a good thing that he is being honoured. The garbage that he's had to put up with in the service of Canada has been huge, and from agitators not even from his riding at that.
Pat
I just wanted to commend your mention of Mr Emerson, reflecting what is clearly some strong opposition to his continuing in his ministry by changing parties. Not a happy situation, normally. It didn't please many of us that Stronach did it,and I am sorry I missed your strong opposition to her move. You and many readers must have gone balistic. No? Hmmm. Also We had a Reform Party MP in Richmond a couple of elections ago, and he switched to the Liberals, and there was much anger here in Richmond. Emerson's case is interesting, because he was master of the file, and most Canucks wanted that bloody trade dispute on lumber to go. One way or another I don;t know we could have overcome the power of the Yanks, who are tough traders, even bullies, in support of their interests. Anyway Emerson has done a good job so maybe we all have to swallow our gall and let him make his pitch for votes next time. But don't go ballistic unless you did on the two occasions I note here, and my guess is, you didn't shed a tear either way.

Emerson has done a good job?
We'll see I guess.
However, he has NOT represented his constituents, his voters, since February 2006.
He and Fortier are shining stars in Harper's Hyrpocritical "do as I say, not as I do" Government.
Poor Emerson: damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Awww, tuff to be a non-partisan playing politics.
Canada will know soon enough if Emerson was worth Billions of dollars to have him s a Tory.
His home riding will have to live with what he does until the next election. Hurrah Olympics.
Though I do have to admit I am thinking (hoping) he might be doing more due diligence concerning his next mission (Olypics) than he did on the softwood fiasco, and maybe the average Joe in BC won't be completely beholden to Olympic-sized debt like many other "fabulous" cities in the past, so maybe Emerson will actually protect BC in his sad little way.
Still, he never consulted his base about his change of heart and so continues to look like a poseur, a shade of a real MP.
He's a businessman, and he better deliver, or it's gonna cost someone (likely BC) a lot of dollars. Let alone what his actions did to the electoral system and how people see their votes as a force.
Looks like his pension is safe though. No matter which way it goes on the softwood deal, he'll come out on top and has nothing to lose either way. Way to go, non-Partisan!
Oh come off it .... Emerson jumped ship because he didn't want to waste his time sitting in Opposition with the likes of Belinda, Brison and Graham ... twiddling his thumbs for the next 10 years out of power. He had a job to do when he joined the Liberals and now he is completing that job as a Conservative.
The people of his riding should appreciate that and they probably do except for the malcontent and miscreant NDP rabble who are making all the stupid useless noise because their candidate came in second.
Emerson is practicing pragmatic politics and ensuring that BC gets as much representation in the Conservative caucus as possible ... while the small minds are playing schoolyard politics like a bunch of crybabies ..... and Emerson is laughing because he is the winner.
Sure.
And can I have a side of raw logs with that?
What's that you say?
Only in Shanghai?
Pity.
.
"However, he has NOT represented his constituents, his voters, since February 2006. "
This is wrong. Emerson has represented his contituents since Februrary 2006. He represents ALL citizens in the riding whether they voted or not, whether they voted for him or not.
Quite a few people vote for Emerson the person, rather than Emerson the Liberal or Emerson the Tory.
The person who crossed from the Reform Party to the Liberals in Richmond was Joe Pesischildo.
Didn't see any "De-Elect" Joe campaigns out there when that happened.
and Scott Brisson? The federal Liberals who ran the De-Elect Emerson campaign in Kingsway should be on his case strongly.
This Emerson debate has had its day.
Time to move on.
