Master and commander

Earlier, we reported on Non-Partisan Association director Alex Tsakumis's accusation that former federal Liberal uber-operative Mark Marissen is presently orchestrating an attempt to takeover the civic party. In an interview with Public Eye, Mr. Marissen declined to comment on the specifics contained in Mr. Tsakumis's email except to say, "Here's the question: does he know what he's saying is inaccurate or does he believe it? Cause I'm not sure which is more disturbing." But Mr. Tsakumis seems to be standing by his accusations. "My response to Mr. Marissen is pretty clear," said the board member. "If he wasn't involved or any of his minions weren't involved (in the present race for seven seats on the association's board of directors) then why didn't he just outright deny it? That, in and of itself, tells me everything."

Alex is off his meds again

Posted by Greeks don't want no freaks on April 12, 2006 10:05 AM

Alex is paranoid. Sad that Sam would be listening to him. Tsakumis and the other necons will cause the death of the NPA simply by driving all of the sane people out.

Bet that Tsakumis' tactics prevail.

Posted by Freaks and geeks on April 12, 2006 11:05 AM

Racist innuendo adds nothing to this blog. Alex Tsakumis is Greek that is true. Alex Tsakumis may be right about Marissen. However Alex Tsakumis is not on meds because I think he's right. No one has had the courage to say what the rest of us were thinking except him.

Posted by gamer on April 12, 2006 11:06 AM

How appalling that some people have to refer to a man's ethnic background to get their point across. We all know that Alex is Greek. Is that bad? He says what he believes. That's refreshing for a political operative. But I have to admit that I could never be that outspoken. Good for him.

Posted by GC on April 12, 2006 11:18 AM

Alex Tsakumis' comments about Christy Clark and Mark Marissen are way off base. He should apologize immediately! They live in Vancouver Centre, not Kingsway. They had nothing to do with the takeover of the Kingsway executive by Wendy Yuan.

Tsakumis is wildly delusional. If people are taking in by his delusions, that doesn't speak well for Vancouver's public office holders.

Posted by Tsak is a Quack on April 12, 2006 11:24 AM

The first person to mention racism is the one complaining about it. Who was making racist allegations against Tsakumis?

Posted by what the? on April 12, 2006 11:26 AM

nice to see my old friends from the martin crew out to bash tsakumis. jeff melland, jeff elzinga and elynn dobbs were all strong supporters of christy clark. they are supported by cameron stjohn who is an operative for marissen. none of them like sam. they are open about it.

Posted by Ragtag Hag on April 12, 2006 11:37 AM

Christy Clark and Mark Marissen live right across the street from Vancouver Kingsway boundaries. Mike Hillman is very involved in the riding. The new directors are all aligned with mark. quit crapping in the bed mark! You got caught. if the story is not true why the vitriol? Just deny it and move along. you're a big boy in the political game. Looks like Tsakumis has got under your skin and your buddys. the Greek is golden on this one.

Posted by GC on April 12, 2006 11:44 AM

Regardless of the scenario, is anyone sick of Marrisen and Clark? They haven't done anything constructive and inclusive. All they know to do is divide and conquer, or better yet use access and influence to muscle people out of their way. It's time to make it known that these thugs are not welcome.

Posted by Come on! on April 12, 2006 11:53 AM

If Marissen and Clark were actually trying to take over the NPA, we would have heard about it by now. We would be smelling the diesel fumes and the curry.

For some reason, Colin Metcalfe and Alex T. and all of their folks have decided to go on an all-out attack on Christy. That's the only way they think that they can get people out to the meeting tonight.

They bring in Doug Leung and Kilby Gibson (who are malcontents in the Liberal Party) to make it look like it is non-partisan, but make no mistake: it's a neo-con deal.

For what reason? Who knows? Most successful leaders bring their rivals into the tent. Scorched earth policy did in Chretien, and it did in Martin.

Sam Sullivan has to get some control over these ideological nutcases if he wants to succeed well into the future, and build a truly broad-based political movement.

Posted by Alex is a nut on April 12, 2006 11:57 AM

Thugs? The only thug is the appointed member of the Board who wrote the e-mail to his Board colleagues.

The neo-cons and their allies (Tsakumis, Langdon, Leung, Metcalfe, Dekovic, Ladner and Anton): tried to quash the resolutions; failed to mail them to members in advance of the meeting; got the Board to declare them "technically non-compliant"; tried to get the candidates disqualified; sent e-mails to the world ... and then complained when they become public; taken one candidate out to lunch with his boss in an effort to intimidate him out of running; harangued the nominators and seconders of Dobbs, Melland and Elzinga in an effort to browbeat them to retract their endorsement; made Christy Clark and Mark Marissen into villains in an effort to get greater turnout from their supporters; and, made this a referendum on support for Sam.

If your goal is to bury the NPA, then that is exactly the way you should behave. Jim Green should send the neocons thank you notes.

Mark Marissen is the best thing to happen to the Federal Liberal Party in B.C. in a long time.

He got the party's act together. He won us more seats. We have a larger membership, higher donations and a stronger organization.

We're lucky to have him and it would great if he just stayed the course with the Federal Liberal Party and forgot about the coalition NPA.

Posted by Superman or God? on April 12, 2006 12:30 PM

You guys are soooo stupid to listen to anything that Tsakumis has to say. And if you think that Melland's running for the board is in any way associated to Marrissen you have got to be joking. Melland is a total dork. I heard a rumour that in early February he called up Liberal party headquarters looking for the contact information for leadership candidates so he could send his resume to them.

Posted by Not a Fed LIberal on April 12, 2006 01:02 PM

i wonder what is going through mark marissen's mind as to what secrets erik bornman will divulge in a few months.

something tells me that marky mark and his funky bunch will not survive.

isn't it great that the trial will occur during the same time as delegate selection meetings here in BC??!!

Posted by KingBossMan on April 12, 2006 01:20 PM

Uhmmm...wasn't it reported on this site that Mark Marissen is currently running Stephane Dion's national campaign to become leader of the Federal Liberal Party? Now I know that NPA zealots think that their upcoming board elections are a REALLY, REALLY big deal but here's a newsflash for you....yawn. Nobody gives a fuck.

I don't know who Alex Tsakumis is. Never met him, but he gives off the peculair scent. My guess is that Mr. Marissen probably has better things to do right now and the NPA-types are miffed that he doesn't want to join their irrelevant little circle jerk.

With that said, it is painfully obvious that this is a ploy by the West Side White Rhodesians in the NPA to keep the undesirables out of their sandbox. Purity of thought has become very important in the NPA remember.

Now, I don't see Christy and Mark sending emails out like Alex's. Isn't Alex's the definition of "divide and conquer"???

What does Sam think of all of this?

Is Sam paranoid too? Why should he be? He is a rock star, especially after being in Turino. He would, all things being equal, win an election by a landslide. Who would vote against the man in the wheelchair? Nothing to worry about.

The only thing standing in Sam's way are the ham-fisted, wack-job actions of his own supporters who will drive people to want to start another municipal political party.

Posted by What does Sam think? on April 12, 2006 02:52 PM

Is it any wonder that the attacks against Alex Tsakumis are so loud and personal? The Marissen Machine was caught with pants firmly planted on the ground by a Conservative battleship who doesn't give a rat's ass about the attacks against him. You have all underestimated Tsakumis. Smarter than all of us by at least a half, if Melland and his Marissen crew lose tonight, Sam Sullivan and the entire NPA caucus owe Tsakumis a HUGE debt of thanks for whipping all the NPA stalwarts into a frenzy. He knew exactly what he was doing and all the Liberal dupes attacking him on this blog have fallen for it. Pretty funny stuff I say.

For all you wannabe operatives, who don't want to put in the time to real political organizing, maybe this Alex guy is on to something.

Here's how it goes:

Make up a story about a hostile takeover attempt that isn't really happening.

Because it's not really happening, it loses.

Then, when it loses, claim victory.

Now that was pretty simple.

And it didn't require any heavy lifting

Wow -- but Alex, we're on to you. Better look under your bed tonight for little scary monsters...

Posted by Alex is brilliant on April 12, 2006 03:09 PM

All of you geniuses who think that by beating on Tsakumis you are accomplishing anything other than what he wants...your are nuts. He is an old Tory street fighter who has made his play and you guys are giving him more platform as the hours pass. Face it, the man has balls to go up against Marrisen, who never forgets a loss. if I were Tsakumis I would watch my back. I suspect that's already covered though.

Posted by Stop this fighting!!!!! on April 12, 2006 03:23 PM

West Side White Rhodesians? Three members of the slate Alex is running are Chinese. How many visable minorities were invited to Marissen's federal leadership receptions? Besides Coco Lefoka, Wendy Yeung and Amar Randhawa?

Posted by Green Eggs and Ham on April 12, 2006 03:37 PM

The Tsakpranos! Need I say more? If Tony Soprano were an NPA member he'd be Alex Tsakumis. They even look alike! Would you want this guy on the other side of you? I don't think so.

Posted by The Tsakpranos on April 12, 2006 03:48 PM

The NPA is a joke. Why on earth would Alex send an email like that to his board? Why would he commit such outrageousness nonsense to paper?

Or did he want it to be leaked so that people would talk about him? You know, the class nerd who finally gets attention because he is involved in something "important" like municipal politics.

Did he learn these dirty tricks from the Republican Party? Or from his save-the-Zalm campaign with Fae Leung?

Will the NPA go the way of VanderZalm's Socreds?

Who else will put up with the insanity?

Posted by jokers on April 12, 2006 08:14 PM

when she was running for mayor, didn't Christy sign up like 2000 new members or something. unless they mess up on their voter turnout again, Marrisen could easily take over the party.

Posted by PublicEyeFan on April 12, 2006 09:09 PM

jokers is obviously a greg wilson acolyte. maybe the ubiquitous useless fool himself...

tsakumis commanded a presence last night like any other political warrior. true to form, but also articulate, his comments regarding the bylaws issue was pretty smart from where i was standing.

sore losers the federal liberals that they couldnt take over the party. the slate that was elected last night were reasonable liberals and one red tory.

thats meant to be joke right? You can call marissen many things but suggesting what you are suggesting is absurd, be serious.

What am I suggesting? Please fill me in on what you think I'm suggesting because I'd like to know.
