The power of youth

Earlier, we reported Coquitlam First campaigner Brian Bonney, a provincial Liberal field organizer, circulated an email encouraging supporters to vote "no" in an online poll asking whether "the Coquitlam First civic election slate (should) fully disclose the list of contributors to its campaigns last fall?" But he wasn't the only one advocating against disclosure. Writing to three Young Liberal executives, Coquitlam First campaign manager Dave Teixeira notified them "There is a poll on www.tricitynews.com where we are trying to drive up the NO vote. As you guys know a lot of young Liberals, I am hoping you can get them to vote in the poll from their home, work and school computers...Do not forward this message, rather here is a sample (thanks to Brian)." Mr. Teixeira is now Burquitlam MLA Harry Bloy's constituency assistant. The following is a complete copy of that email, which was copied to Mr. Bonney and Liberal field organizer Mark Robertson's party email addresses. Mr. Robertson was Team Burnaby's campaign manager.

Subject: URGENT - Need Young Liberals Help

Kevin, Chris and Woosang

I am hoping you can help with an URGENT matter.

There is a poll on www.tricitynews.com where we are trying to drive up the NO vote.

As you guys know a lot of young Liberals, I am hoping you can get them to vote in the poll from their home, work and school computers. The no vote was well in the lead, however, it appears CUPE has sent out similar messages and the vote is going the other way.

The reason for the urgency is that the vote will stop either today or tomorrow - we are not sure.

Thanks for your help - and please let me know you received this.

Do not forward this message, rather here is a sample (thanks to Brian):

Wow.

Email cut-outs.....

Who would-a-thunk-it?

5:51 AM?! To a bunch of Young Liberals?!

It makes you wonder just what the panic was about.

Posted by Wow on April 2, 2006 11:13 AM

I'm on the other end of the political spectrum, but I also get a lot of panicky emails from varous COPE and NDP activists urging me to immediately go to some local paper's online poll and vote a certain way. I always ignore them for the simple reason that such polls are not scientific and meaningless. In another few days the Tricity News will be running another poll and everyone will have forgotten about this one (or they would have if Brian Bonney hadn't suddenly panicked about it. Now, thanks to his antics, the poll is suddenly news.

As Yogi Berra might have said, "online polls aren't worth the paper they're written on."

That's the point Wetcoast.

Why freak out over some online poll no one is likely to pay attention to. You think Bonney and Teixeira would have been smart enough to just it blow over.

They didn't.

If they aren't guilty of anything, they sure as hell are acting like it.

haha...why do you think Coquitlam First and TEAM Buranby both lost?

Maybe it has to do with the competency of the two campaign managers...

Well it seems that idiots are surely rewarded in the BC Liberals. Brian Bonney has just made Director of Operations and is in charge of constituency development.

There goes the party, fellas.
