Bombshell dropping into Vancouver

Former federal Conservative Belinda Stronach will be making a campaign swing through Vancouver next week, as part of her bid to become the next Liberal leader. A reception for the former Magna International Inc. chief executive officer will be hosted at the home of national party vice-president Mike Hillman on Wednesday as part of a series of gathering to "discuss the future of the Liberal Party of Canada and the LPC in B.C." The following is a copy of the reception invite.

You are cordially invited to a reception with

Hon. Belinda Stronach

Wednesday, March 22, 2006

6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Hosted by: Michael and Donna Hillman

Please join us as we discuss the future of the Liberal Party of Canada and the LPC in B.C.

This reception is another in a series of similar gatherings in British Columbia featuring prominent Liberals from across Canada.

We think it is important to have an open dialogue about the future of our Party and who should lead it. This is neither intended nor should be interpreted as an endorsement or support of any particular candidate for the upcoming leadership race in the Liberal Party of Canada but rather a chance to meet and help form the debate to ensure BC issues are front and centre.

If you are talking as in "Blond Bombshell" you really should chose your words more carefully. If she was male, would he be called blond bombshell. If her arrival stirs things up well that's a different type of bombshell and the same would apply to a male , maybe candidate

DL, who cares?

God, I'm female and I would tap that.

While I would like to enjoy seeing you tap that, I would question whether you think the same old people with the same old boring ass ideas are going to change the liberal party..... these people are un-fucking inspiring and the last time I checked a leader needs to be, um, i dunno, somewhat inspiring (i.e. thought invoking). I challenge everyone out there to name one of person named so far in the liberal leadership race that is even remotely inspiring.

Honestly,

Does anyone think the crew right now (i.e. Jamie Elmhirst, Mark Marissen et al.) can actually rebuild the liberal party in BC, or can they just afford the wine and cheese...

A leader needs to be inspiring? Like, say, Stephen Harper or Jack Layton? Maybe now you think that's just a Canadian thing and other countries' leaders are different, like, say, the ever-inspirational George W. Bush?

Interesting how all the BC Big Boys are dividing and taking one candidate each so they don't lose power.

Stronach would be wise to support a potential electorial winner, and then become deputy-pm.

Belinda did well in the CPC race against Stephen because the Progressive Conservatives were "anyone but Harper" - still are. The PCers had long recognized his my-way-or-the-highway approach to opinion development. Any credible moderate could have done as well against Harper as the moderates were desperate for someone less belligerent and narrow..

For Belinda, in the Liberal party there is no "anyone but" movement to support her campaign. Possibly, she may be the anyone-but factor. However, if she were to demonstrate team spirit and support a candidate, then she might rise.

She needs to *earn* friends in the Liberals party; she does not have the natural anti-Harper PC crowd working with her on mass now. She needs to recognize the need build respect. The Liberal Party West of Alberta is likely to support Ignatieff. For Belinda to actually be accepted in the Liberal Party she needs to work with them.

Jenn, you're beginning to sound like one of Hedy Fry's "non-partisan" patronage appointees who is forever blowing the Liberal trumpet.

On a philoshical basis Stephen Harper is hardly my cup of tea, and I am worried that his ideological side, so fully on display during his years at the NCC, hasn't changed, it's just been submerged. Still, he bested Paul Martin and as Prime Minister so far he's done well, in spite of the fuss over Emerson. His trip to Afganistan is bound to be worth at least 5 points in the polls, oustide the GTA at any rate.

Jack Layton has had a long career in Toronto politics and has been a leader in terms of bringing environmental causes into the consciousness of big city politics there. That's not an easy thing to do in a city where smugness and cynicism is a principle, not just an attitude.

Paul Martin's biggest successes were in business. In politics he tried to be inspirational on aid issues, but his comical attempts to suck up to Bono ultimately led to rejection.

As for Billionaire Blonde Bombshell Businesswoman Belinda Stronach, she, like former BC Premier Bill Bennett inherited her mantle of success. Can you explain to me what is inspirational about that?

Budd Campbell says " ... That's not an easy thing to do in a city [Toronto] where smugness and cynicism is a principle, not just an attitude."

God I hate this Let's-all-hate-Toronto stuff. It's so full of self-loathing ... so provincial, small-time, loser-like. You'd never say such things about New York or Chicago ... and yet Toronto out-classes them in so many ways. Jane Jacobs, for chrissake, moved to Toronto years ago. Conrad & Barbara choose to live in Toronto, as does Ken Thompson and a ton of others who have homes in London, Florida, etc.

Stop it, I say. Apologize. And go spend a week re-acquainting yourself with the Toronto which provides 1/3 Canada's economy and which has survived Mike Harris, SARS, and punitive federal budget cutbacks which are encouraged by the stupid knee-jerk insults springing so readily from unthinking Canadians. Stop it, stop it, stop it.

Toronto is 1/3 of the Canadian economy. Hahahaha.

What have you been smoking?

Usually Budd spouts NDP pap but his last post is dead on.

Stronach has no substance. Currently her membership in the liberal party is only about one thing: wanting to be leader of a party.

She realized she could never win in the tories so she jumped ship for a star posting in the libs and her 1 vote saved their government from falling.

Now she and her daddy's money want to take over the liberal party.

Sad thing is she has a respectable chance at winning.

I predict she will make it to the final ballot.

Either her winning or Bob Rae will just about guarantee a majority tory gov.

Cheers

"... Conrad & Barbara choose to live in Toronto, as does Ken Thompson and a ton of others who have homes in London, Florida, etc"

I guess this is our Laugh of the Day.

Damn, obviously I misread the situation. I see now that a cool dude will leap at any opportunity to hate his cities and scorn his people. Why didn't I think of that myself? Bad, bad!

So let's hate Vancouver, where smugness and cynicism has reached the pinnacle of perfection. Let's hate Edmonton too. Regina. Winnipeg. The whole shebang, right through to St John's. I don't know what despicable attitudes they may hold dear, but we can find something there which is better than anyone else's and we can hate them for it.

No use confining ourselves to hating only the biggest and best. Let's hate 'em all. Scorn 'em all. The better to exploit 'em all. And we'll holiday in Texas. Yahoooo!!
